Exterior cleanliness was designed to signify the purity of the heart, with which we must appear before God. Ver. 7. Pour, in the form of a cross or T, according to many of the Rabbin, &c. The inferior priests were anointed only on the hands. The Levites were sprinkled with oil, mixed with the blood of the victims. The custom of anointing prophets, priests, and kings, was peculiar to the Jews; as if to foreshow Christ, the great anointed of the Lord. S. Aug. Ps. xliv. Dan. ix. 24.

Ver. 10. Head. Confessing that they are sinners, and deserve to die. Thus they shall substitute the victim instead of themselves, and obtain pardon. In the holocaust, (v. 15,) and the peace-offering, (v. 19,) they impose their hands, having first washed them) and pronounce some prayer. C.

Ver. 11. Beside. Al, is now wanting in the printed Heb. and Sam. though expressed by the Protestant translators, (who often help their text) and by all the ancient versions. Kennicott mentions one MS. which retains it very properly. H. — The victim was offered on the altar of holocausts, before the tabernacle, the seat of God's majesty. Whether Men Are Under a Necessity of Precept to Make Oblations?
Objection 1: It would seem that men are not bound by precept to make oblations. Men are not bound, at the time of the Gospel, to observe the ceremonial precepts of the Old Law, as stated above (I-II, Q. 103, AA. 3, 4). Now the offering of oblations is one of the ceremonial precepts of the Old Law, since it is written (Ex. 23:14): "Three times every year you shall celebrate feasts with Me," and further on (Ex. 23:15): "Thou shalt not appear empty before Me." Therefore men are not now under a necessity of precept to make oblations.
Obj. 2: Further, before they are made, oblations depend on man's will, as appears from our Lord's saying (Matt. 5:23), "If . . . thou offer thy gift at the altar," as though this were left to the choice of the offerer: and when once oblations have been made, there is no way of offering them again. Therefore in no way is a man under a necessity of precept to make oblations.
Obj. 3: Further, if anyone is bound to give a certain thing to the Church, and fails to give it, he can be compelled to do so by being deprived of the Church's sacraments. But it would seem unlawful to refuse the sacraments of the Church to those who refuse to make oblations according to a decree of the sixth council [*Can. Trullan, xxiii, quoted I, qu. i, can. Nullus]: "Let none who dispense Holy Communion exact anything of the recipient, and if they exact anything let them be deposed." Therefore it is not necessary that men should make oblations.
_On the contrary,_ Gregory says [*Gregory VII; Concil. Roman. v, can. xii]: "Let every Christian take care that he offer something to God at the celebration of Mass."
_I answer that,_ As stated above (Q. 85, A. 3, ad 3), the term "oblation" is common to all things offered for the Divine worship, so that if a thing be offered to be destroyed in worship of God, as though it were being made into something holy, it is both an oblation and a sacrifice. Wherefore it is written (Ex. 29:18): "Thou shalt offer the whole ram for a burnt-offering upon the altar; it is an oblation to the Lord, a most sweet savor of the victim of the Lord"; and (Lev. 2:1): "When anyone shall offer an oblation of sacrifice to the Lord, his offering shall be of fine flour." If, on the other hand, it be offered with a view to its remaining entire and being deputed to the worship of God or to the use of His ministers, it will be an oblation and not a sacrifice. Accordingly it is essential to oblations of this kind that they be offered voluntarily, according to Ex. 25:2, of "every man that offereth of his own accord you shall take them." Nevertheless it may happen in four ways that one is bound to make oblations. First, on account of a previous agreement: as when a person is granted a portion of Church land, that he may make certain oblations at fixed times, although this has the character of rent. Secondly, by reason of a previous assignment or promise; as when a man offers a gift among the living, or by will bequeaths to the Church something whether movable or immovable to be delivered at some future time. Thirdly, on account of the need of the Church, for instance if her ministers were without means of support. Fourthly, on account of custom; for the faithful are bound at certain solemn feasts to make certain customary oblations. In the last two cases, however, the oblation remains voluntary, as regards, to wit, the quantity or kind of the thing offered.
Reply Obj. 1: Under the New Law men are not bound to make oblations on account of legal solemnities, as stated in Exodus, but on account of certain other reasons, as stated above.
Reply Obj. 2: Some are bound to make oblations, both before making them, as in the first, third, and fourth cases, and after they have made them by assignment or promise: for they are bound to offer in reality that which has been already offered to the Church by way of assignment.
Reply Obj. 3: Those who do not make the oblations they are bound to make may be punished by being deprived of the sacraments, not by the priest himself to whom the oblations should be made, lest he seem to exact, something for bestowing the sacraments, but by someone superior to him. _______________________

And thou shalt take all from their hands; and shalt burn them upon the altar for a holocaust, a most sweet savour in the sight of the Lord, because it is his oblation.

Thou shalt take also the breast of the ram, wherewith Aaron was consecrated, and elevating it thou shalt sanctify it before the Lord, and it shall fall to thy share.

And thou shalt sanctify both the consecrated breast, and the shoulder that thou didst separate of the ram,

29:28 quo initiatus est Aaron et filii ejus, cedentque in partem Aaron et filiorum ejus jure perpetuo a filiis Israel : quia primitiva sunt et initia de victimis eorum pacificis quae offerunt Domino.
*H Wherewith Aaron was consecrated and his sons, and they shall fall to Aaron's share, and his sons', by a perpetual right from the children of Israel: because they are the choicest and the beginnings of their peace victims which they offer to the Lord.
Ver. 28. Israel. As these parts have been offered by Aaron to the Lord, so the Israelites shall present them to him and his sons, when they offer sacrifice. M. — All the different kinds of victims were immolated on this occasion, because the priests were consecrated to offer them all. D.

And if there remain of the consecrated flesh, or of the bread, till the morning, thou shalt burn the remainder with fire: they shall not be eaten, because they are sanctified.

Ver. 39. Morning. About sun-rise. — Evening, or between the two vespers. Ex. xii. 6. The lambs were provided by the people; flour, wine, and oil, by the priests. Philo. — The wine was poured at the foot of the altar, the flour and oil were burnt upon it, and not placed on the head of the victim, as was customary among the pagans, frontique invergit vina sacerdos. Virg. vi. Maimon. By these sacrifices, God was to be adored as the author both of day and night; (M.) and we are admonished of our duty of praying to him, particularly at those times. Τὸν ἀμνὸν τὸν ἕνα ποιήσεις τὸ πρωῒ, καὶ τὸν ἀμνὸν τὸν δεύτερον ποιήσεις τὸ δειλινόν.
אֶת הַ/כֶּ֥בֶשׂ הָ/אֶחָ֖ד תַּעֲשֶׂ֣ה בַ/בֹּ֑קֶר וְ/אֵת֙ הַ/כֶּ֣בֶשׂ הַ/שֵּׁנִ֔י תַּעֲשֶׂ֖ה בֵּ֥ין הָ/עַרְבָּֽיִם
29:40 decimam partem similae conspersae oleo tuso, quod habeat mensuram quartam partem hin, et vinum ad libandum ejusdem mensurae in agno uno.
*H With one lamb a tenth part of flour tempered with beaten oil, of the fourth part of a hin, and wine for libation of the same measure.

Καὶ δέκατον σεμιδάλεως πεφυραμένης ἐν ἐλαίῳ κεκομμένῳ τῷ τετάρτῳ τοῦ εἴν· καὶ σπονδὴν τὸ τέταρτον τοῦ εἲν οἴνου τῷ ἀμνῷ τῷ ἑνί.
וְ/עִשָּׂרֹ֨ן סֹ֜לֶת בָּל֨וּל בְּ/שֶׁ֤מֶן כָּתִית֙ רֶ֣בַע הַ/הִ֔ין וְ/נֵ֕סֶךְ רְבִעִ֥ית הַ/הִ֖ין יָ֑יִן לַ/כֶּ֖בֶשׂ הָ/אֶחָֽד
29:41 Alterum vero agnum offeres ad vesperam juxta ritum matutinae oblationis, et juxta ea quae diximus, in odorem suavitatis :
And the other lamb thou shalt offer in the evening, according to the rite of the morning oblation, and according to what we have said, for a savour of sweetness:
Καὶ τὸν ἀμνὸν τὸν δεύτερον ποιήσεις τὸ δειλινὸν, κατὰ τὴν θυσίαν τὴν πρωϊνὴν, καὶ κατὰ τὴν σπονδὴν αὐτοῦ· ποιήσεις εἰς ὀσμὴν εὐωδίας κάρπωμα Κυρίῳ,
וְ/אֵת֙ הַ/כֶּ֣בֶשׂ הַ/שֵּׁנִ֔י תַּעֲשֶׂ֖ה בֵּ֣ין הָ/עַרְבָּ֑יִם כְּ/מִנְחַ֨ת הַ/בֹּ֤קֶר וּ/כְ/נִסְכָּ/הּ֙ תַּֽעֲשֶׂה לָּ֔/הּ לְ/רֵ֣יחַ נִיחֹ֔חַ אִשֶּׁ֖ה לַ/יהוָֽה
29:42 sacrificium est Domino, oblatione perpetua in generationes vestras, ad ostium tabernaculi testimonii coram Domino, ubi constituam ut loquar ad te.
It is a sacrifice to the Lord, by perpetual oblation unto your generations, at the door of the tabernacle of the testimony before the Lord, where I will appoint to speak unto thee.
θυσίαν ἐνδελεχισμοῦ εἰς γενεὰς ὑμῶν, ἐπὶ θύρας τῆς σκηνῆς τοῦ μαρτυρίου ἔναντι Κυρίου, ἐν οἷς γνωσθήσομαί σοι ἐκεῖθεν, ὥστε λαλῆσαί σοι.
עֹלַ֤ת תָּמִיד֙ לְ/דֹרֹ֣תֵי/כֶ֔ם פֶּ֥תַח אֹֽהֶל מוֹעֵ֖ד לִ/פְנֵ֣י יְהוָ֑ה אֲשֶׁ֨ר אִוָּעֵ֤ד לָ/כֶם֙ שָׁ֔מָּ/ה לְ/דַבֵּ֥ר אֵלֶ֖י/ךָ שָֽׁם
29:43 Ibique praecipiam filiis Israel, et sanctificabitur altare in gloria mea.
*H And there will I command the children of Israel, and the altar shall be sanctified by my glory.

Καὶ τάξομαι ἐκεῖ τοῖς υἱοῖς Ἰσραὴλ, καὶ ἁγιασθήσομαι ἐν δόξῃ μου.
וְ/נֹעַדְתִּ֥י שָׁ֖מָּ/ה לִ/בְנֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל וְ/נִקְדַּ֖שׁ בִּ/כְבֹדִֽ/י
29:44 Sanctificabo et tabernaculum testimonii cum altari, et Aaron cum filiis suis, ut sacerdotio fungantur mihi.
I will sanctify also the tabernacle of the testimony with the altar, and Aaron with his sons, to do the office of priesthood unto me.
Καὶ ἁγιάσω τὴν σκηνὴν τοῦ μαρτυρίου, καὶ τὸ θυσιαστήριον· καὶ Ἀαρὼν καὶ τοὺς υἱοὺς αὐτοῦ ἁγιάσω, ἱερατεύειν μοι.
וְ/קִדַּשְׁתִּ֛י אֶת אֹ֥הֶל מוֹעֵ֖ד וְ/אֶת הַ/מִּזְבֵּ֑חַ וְ/אֶת אַהֲרֹ֧ן וְ/אֶת בָּנָ֛י/ו אֲקַדֵּ֖שׁ לְ/כַהֵ֥ן לִֽ/י
29:45 Et habitabo in medio filiorum Israel, eroque eis Deus,
And I will dwell in the midst of the children of Israel, and will be their God:
Καὶ ἐπικληθήσομαι ἐν τοῖς υἱοῖς Ἰσραὴλ, καὶ ἔσομαι αὐτῶν Θεός.
וְ/שָׁ֣כַנְתִּ֔י בְּ/ת֖וֹךְ בְּנֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל וְ/הָיִ֥יתִי לָ/הֶ֖ם לֵ/אלֹהִֽים
29:46 et scient quia ego Dominus Deus eorum, qui eduxi eos de terra Aegypti, ut manerem inter illos, ego Dominus Deus ipsorum.
And they shall know that I am the Lord their God, who have brought them out of the land of Egypt, that I might abide among them, I the Lord their God.
Καὶ γνώσονται, ὅτι ἐγώ εἰμι Κύριος ὁ Θεὸς αὐτῶν, ὁ ἐξαγαγὼν αὐτοὺς ἐκ γῆς Αἰγύπτου, ἐπικληθῆναι αὐτοῖς, καὶ εἶναι αὐτῶν Θεός.
וְ/יָדְע֗וּ כִּ֣י אֲנִ֤י יְהוָה֙ אֱלֹ֣הֵי/הֶ֔ם אֲשֶׁ֨ר הוֹצֵ֧אתִי אֹתָ֛/ם מֵ/אֶ֥רֶץ מִצְרַ֖יִם לְ/שָׁכְנִ֣/י בְ/תוֹכָ֑/ם אֲנִ֖י יְהוָ֥ה אֱלֹהֵי/הֶֽם
