Ver. 1. Eight years. After he had reigned other eight, being still but a boy, he began more seriously to seek the Lord, and purified his dominions, and the neighbouring country, from all the vestiges of idolatry. 2 Par. xxxiii. 3. He was one of the three most excellent kings of Juda, (H.) and might be said to be the last; as those who followed were displaced at pleasure by Egypt, &c. D.

22:2 Fecitque quod placitum erat coram Domino, et ambulavit per omnes vias David patris sui : non declinavit ad dexteram, sive ad sinistram.
And he did that which was right in the sight of the Lord, and walked in all the ways of David, his father: he turned not aside to the right hand, or to the left.
Καὶ ἐποίησε τὸ εὐθὲς ἐν ὀφθαλμοῖς Κυρίου, καὶ ἐπορεύθη ἐν πάσῃ ὁδῷ Δαυὶδ τοῦ πατρὸς αὐτοῦ, οὐκ ἀπέστη δεξιὰ καὶ ἀριστερά.

Ver. 3. Scribe of. Heb. "to the temple." Chal. Syr. &c. It is not certain that there was such an officer as scribe of the temple; but the king's secretary was ordered by Joas to take an account of the money contributed, C. xii. 10. C. — Josias followed the same plan. T.

Καὶ ἐγενήθη ἐν τῷ ὀκτωκαιδεκάτῳ ἔτει τῷ βασιλεῖ Ἰωσείᾳ, ἐν τῷ μηνὶ τῷ ὀγδόῳ ἀπέστειλεν ὁ βασιλεὺς τὸν Σαπφὰν υἱὸν Ἐζελίου υἱοῦ Μεσολλὰμ τὸν γραμματέα οἴκου Κυρίου, λέγων,

22:4 Vade ad Helciam sacerdotem magnum, ut confletur pecunia quae illata est in templum Domini, quam collegerunt janitores templi a populo :

ἀνάβηθι πρὸς Χελκίαν τὸν ἱερέα τὸν μέγαν, καὶ σφράγισον τὸ ἀργύριον τὸ εἰσενεχθὲν ἐν οἴκῳ Κυρίου, ὃ συνήγαγον οἱ φυλάσσοντες τὸν σταθμὸν παρὰ τοῦ λαοῦ.

22:5 deturque fabris per praepositos domus Domini, qui et distribuant eam his qui operantur in templo Domini, ad instauranda sartatecta templi :

Ver. 5. Overseers, or undertakers. Grotius. — People of the great respectability were selected, so that no reckoning with them was requisite, v. 7. H. — They were thus encouraged to do the work with greater perfection. C.

22:6 tignariis videlicet et caementariis, et iis qui interrupta componunt : et ut emantur ligna, et lapides de lapicidinis, ad instaurandum templum Domini.
That is, to carpenters and masons, and to such as mend breaches: and that timber may be bought, and stones out of the quarries, to repair the temple of the Lord.
τοῖς τέκτοσι καὶ τοῖς οἰκοδόμοις καὶ τοῖς τειχισταῖς, καὶ τοῦ κτήσασθαι ξύλα καὶ λίθους λατομητοὺς, τοῦ κραταιῶσαι τὸ βεδὲκ τοῦ οἴκου.

22:7 Verumtamen non supputetur eis argentum quod accipiunt, sed in potestate habeant, et in fide.
But let there be no reckoning made with them of the money which they receive, but let them have it in their power, and in their trust.

Ver. 8. The book of the law, (that is, Deuteronomy. Ch. — S. Chrys. hom. 9. in Mat.) or the Pentateuch. Joseph. — Achaz, Manasses, and Amon, had burnt (R. Solomon) as many copies as they could, (H.) but some zealous priests had concealed this copy, in a box, in the wall of the temple, (Lyran) or in the treasury adjoining it. The very hand writing of Moses, containing the record of the covenant, (or the 28, 29, 30, and 31st chapters of Deuteronomy) which was placed in (C.) or beside the ark, was now happily discovered. H. — It seems it had been misplaced, as the ark itself had been removed, 2 Par. xxiv. 14. and xxxv. 3. This venerable monument, and the dreadful menaces which it denounced, made the deepest impression upon all, as we should read the autographs of S. Matthew, &c. with far greater respect and emotion than we do the printed copies. It is not at all probably that all the books of Scripture had been destroyed, as there were always some religious souls in both kingdoms; and if some kings had already made the impious attempt, (H.) of which, however, they are never accused in Scripture, they would not have been able to carry their malicious designs into effect. Josias had, before his 18th year, made many excellent regulations, conformably to the law, which was well understood, and carefully preserved by the priests and prophets. C. 2 Par. xvii. 9. — Read it. Scribes were generally chosen from among the Levites. C.

Καὶ εἶπε Χελκίας ὁ ἱερεὺς ὁ μέγας πρὸς Σαπφὰν τὸν γραμματέα, βιβλίον τοῦ νόμου εὗρον ἐν οἴκῳ Κυρίου· καὶ ἔδωκε Χελκίας τὸ βιβλίον πρὸς Σαπφὰν, καὶ ἀνέγνω αὐτό.

22:9 Venit quoque Saphan scriba ad regem, et renuntiavit ei quod praeceperat, et ait : Conflaverunt servi tui pecuniam quae reperta est in domo Domini, et dederunt ut distribueretur fabris a praefectis operum templi Domini.
And Saphan, the scribe, came to the king, and brought him word again concerning that which he had commanded, and said: Thy servants have gathered together the money that was found in the house of the Lord: and they have given it to be distributed to the workmen, by the overseers of the works of the temple of the Lord.
Καὶ εἰσῆλθεν ἐν οἴκῳ Κυρίου πρὸς τὸν βασιλέα, καὶ ἀπέστρεψε τῷ βασιλεῖ ῥῆμα, καὶ εἶπεν, ἐχώνευσαν οἱ δοῦλοί σου τὸ ἀργύριον τὸ εὑρεθὲν ἐν οἴκῳ Κυρίου, καὶ ἔδωκαν αὐτὸ ἐπὶ χεῖρα ποιούντων τὰ ἔργα καθεσταμένων ἐν οἴκῳ Κυρίου.

22:10 Narravit quoque Saphan scriba regi, dicens : Librum dedit mihi Helcias sacerdos. Quem cum legisset Saphan coram rege,
And Saphan, the scribe, told the king, saying: Helcias, the priest, hath delivered to me a book. And when Saphan had read it before the king,
Καὶ εἶπε Σαπφὰν ὁ γραμματεὺς πρὸς τὸν βασιλέα, λέγων, βιβλίον ἔδωκέ μοι Χελκίας ὁ ἱερεύς· καὶ ἀνέγνω αὐτὸ Σαπφὰν ἐνώπιον τοῦ βασιλέως.

22:11 et audisset rex verba libri legis Domini, scidit vestimenta sua.
*H And the king had heard the words of the law of the Lord, he rent his garments.

And he commanded Helcias, the priest, and Ahicam, the son of Saphan, and Achobor, the son of Micha, and Saphan, the scribe, and Asaia, the king's servant, saying:
Καὶ ἐνετείλατο ὁ βασιλεὺς τῷ Χελκίᾳ τῷ ἱερεῖ, καὶ τῷ Ἀχικὰμ υἱῷ Σαπφὰν, καὶ τῷ Ἀχοβὼρ υἱῷ Μιχαίου, καὶ τῷ Σαπφὰν τῷ γραμματεῖ, καὶ τῷ Ἀσαΐᾳ δούλῳ τοῦ βασιλέως, λέγων,

22:13 Ite et consulite Dominum super me, et super populo, et super omni Juda, de verbis voluminis istius, quod inventum est : magna enim ira Domini succensa est contra nos, quia non audierunt patres nostri verba libri hujus, ut facerent omne quod scriptum est nobis.
Go and consult the Lord for me, and for the people, and for all Juda, concerning the words of this book which is found: for the great wrath of the Lord is kindled against us, because our fathers have not hearkened to the words of this book, to do all that is written for us.
δεῦτε, ἐκζητήσατε τὸν Κύριον περὶ ἐμοῦ, καὶ περὶ παντὸς τοῦ λαοῦ, καὶ περὶ παντὸς τοῦ Ἰούδα, καὶ περὶ τῶν λόγων τοῦ βιβλίου τοῦ εὑρεθέντος τούτου, ὅτι μεγάλη ἡ ὀργὴ Κυρίου ἐκκεκαυμένη ἐν ἡμῖν, ὑπὲρ οὗ οὐκ ἤκουσαν οἱ πατέρες ἡμῶν τῶν λόγων τοῦ βιβλίου τούτου τοῦ ποιεῖν κατὰ πάντα τὰ γεγραμμένα καθʼ ἡμῶν.

22:14 Ierunt itaque Helcias sacerdos, et Ahicam, et Achobor, et Sapham, et Asaia, ad Holdam prophetidem, uxorem Sellum filii Thecuae filii Araas custodis vestium, quae habitabat in Jerusalem in Secunda : locutique sunt ad eam.
*H So Helcias, the priest, and Ahicam, and Achobor, and Sapham, and Asaia, went to Holda, the prophetess, the wife of Sellum, the son of Thecua, the son of Araas, keeper of the wardrobe, who dwelt in Jerusalem, in the Second: and they spoke to her.


Ver. 14. Holda. She is known only by this honourable embassy. It is rather wonderful that Jeremias was not consulted, as he had began to prophesy five years before. But he probably resided at Anathoth. Sophonias appeared, perhaps, only towards the end of the reign of Josias. C. — The Second, a street, or part of the city so called; in Hebrew, Massem. Ch. — The Sept. retain this word, (M.) or rather, "in Masena;" Heb. mishne. H. — Manasses inclosed Jerusalem with a second wall, (2 Par. xxxiii. 14. C.) unless this was done by his father, ib. xxxii. 5. T. — Here Holda is said to have kept a school. C. — Chal. "the house of doctrine," a place next in importance to the temple. Vatab. — S. Jerom speaks of this Second, as of a gate, or part of Jerusalem, between the inner and the outer wall. C. Pelag, 2 Irad. in 2 Par. and in Sophon. i. 10. M.

Καὶ ἐπορεύθη Χελκίας ὁ ἱερεὺς, καὶ Ἀχικὰμ, καὶ Ἀχοβὼρ, καὶ Σαπφὰν, καὶ Ἀσαΐας πρὸς Ὄλδαν τὴν προφῆτιν μητέρα Σελλὴμ υἱοῦ Θεκουαὺ υἱοῦ Ἀρὰς τοῦ ἱματιοφύλακος· καὶ αὕτη κατῴκει ἐν Ἰερουσαλὴμ ἐν τῇ Μασενᾷ· καὶ ἐλάλησαν πρὸς αὐτήν.

And she said to them: Thus saith the Lord, the God of Israel: Tell the man that sent you to me:

22:16 Haec dicit Dominus : Ecce ego adducam mala super locum istum, et super habitatores ejus, omnia verba legis quae legit rex Juda :
Thus saith the Lord: Behold, I will bring evils upon this place, and upon the inhabitants thereof, all the words of the law which the king of Juda hath read:
τάδε λέγει Κύριος, ἰδοὺ ἐγὼ ἐπάγω κακὰ ἐπὶ τὸν τόπον τοῦτον, καὶ ἐπὶ τοὺς ἐνοικοῦντας αὐτὸν πάντας τοὺς λόγους τοῦ βιβλίου οὓς ἀνέγνω βασιλεὺς Ἰούδα,
כֹּ֚ה אָמַ֣ר יְהוָ֔ה הִנְ/נִ֨י מֵבִ֥יא רָעָ֛ה אֶל הַ/מָּק֥וֹם הַ/זֶּ֖ה וְ/עַל יֹֽשְׁבָ֑י/ו אֵ֚ת כָּל דִּבְרֵ֣י הַ/סֵּ֔פֶר אֲשֶׁ֥ר קָרָ֖א מֶ֥לֶךְ יְהוּדָֽה
22:17 quia dereliquerunt me, et sacrificaverunt diis alienis, irritantes me in cunctis operibus manuum suarum : et succendetur indignatio mea in loco hoc, et non extinguetur.
Because they have forsaken me, and have sacrificed to strange gods, provoking me by all the works of their hands: therefore my indignation shall be kindled against this place, and shall not be quenched.
ἀνθʼ ὧν ἐγκατέλιπόν με, καὶ ἐθυμίων θεοῖς ἑτέροις, ὅπως παροργίσωσί με ἐν τοῖς ἔργοις τῶν χειρῶν αὐτῶν, καὶ ἐκκαυθήσεται θυμός μου ἐν τῷ τόπῳ τούτῳ καὶ οὐ σβεσθήσεται.

22:18 Regi autem Juda, qui misit vos ut consuleretis Dominum, sic dicetis : Haec dicit Dominus Deus Israel : Pro eo quod audisti verba voluminis,
But to the king of Juda, who sent you to consult the Lord, thus shall you say: Thus saith the Lord, the God of Israel: for as much as thou hast heard the words of the book,
Καὶ πρὸς βασιλέα Ἰούδα τὸν ἀποστείλαντα ὑμᾶς ἐπιζητῆσαι τὸν Κύριον, τάδε ἐρεῖτε πρὸς αὐτὸν, τάδε λέγει Κύριος ὁ Θεὸς Ἰσραὴλ, οἱ λόγοι οὓς ἤκουσας,
וְ/אֶל מֶ֣לֶךְ יְהוּדָ֗ה הַ/שֹּׁלֵ֤חַ אֶתְ/כֶם֙ לִ/דְרֹ֣שׁ אֶת יְהוָ֔ה כֹּ֥ה תֹאמְר֖וּ אֵלָ֑י/ו כֹּֽה אָמַ֤ר יְהוָה֙ אֱלֹהֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל הַ/דְּבָרִ֖ים אֲשֶׁ֥ר שָׁמָֽעְתָּ
22:19 et perterritum est cor tuum, et humiliatus es coram Domino, auditis sermonibus contra locum istum et habitatores ejus, quod videlicet fierent in stuporem et in maledictum : et scidisti vestimenta tua, et flevisti coram me, et ego audivi, ait Dominus :
And thy heart hath been moved to fear, and thou hast humbled thyself before the Lord, hearing the words against this place, and the inhabitants thereof, to wit, that they should become a wonder and a curse: and thou hast rent thy garments, and wept before me; I also have heard thee; saith the Lord.
ἀνθʼ ὧν ὅτι ἡπαλύνθη ἡ καρδία σου, καὶ ἐνετράπης ἀπὸ προσώπου, ὡς ἤκουσας ὅσα ἐλάλησα ἐπὶ τὸν τόπον τοῦτον καὶ ἐπὶ τοὺς ἐνοικοῦντας αὐτὸν, τοῦ εἶναι εἰς ἀφανισμὸν καὶ εἰς κατάραν, καὶ διέῤῥηξας τὰ ἱμάτιά σου καὶ ἔκλαυσας ἐνώπιόν μου, καί γε ἐγὼ ἤκουσα, λέγει Κύριος.
יַ֠עַן רַךְ לְבָ֨בְ/ךָ֜ וַ/תִּכָּנַ֣ע מִ/פְּנֵ֣י יְהוָ֗ה בְּֽ/שָׁמְעֲ/ךָ֡ אֲשֶׁ֣ר דִּבַּרְתִּי֩ עַל הַ/מָּק֨וֹם הַ/זֶּ֜ה וְ/עַל יֹשְׁבָ֗י/ו לִ/הְי֤וֹת לְ/שַׁמָּה֙ וְ/לִ/קְלָלָ֔ה וַ/תִּקְרַע֙ אֶת בְּגָדֶ֔י/ךָ וַ/תִּבְכֶּ֖ה לְ/פָנָ֑/י וְ/גַ֧ם אָנֹכִ֛י שָׁמַ֖עְתִּי נְאֻם יְהוָֽה
22:20 idcirco colligam te ad patres tuos, et colligeris ad sepulchrum tuum in pace, ut non videant oculi tui omnia mala quae inducturus sum super locum istum.
*H Therefore I will gather thee to thy fathers, and thou shalt be gathered to thy sepulchre in peace; that thy eyes may not see all the evils which I will bring upon this place.


Ver. 20. Peace, before these horrors overtake the city. Josias was interred with all the usual honours, having fallen in battle. C. xxiii. 29. C. — Instead of peace, the Alex. Sept. reads, "in Jerusalem," to which city Josias was brought from Mageddo, where he had perhaps rashly attacked the king of Egypt, with whom he had not been engaged in war. H. — This last good king was given to Juda, that he people might not pretend that they were forced to embrace idolatry by the royal power. S. Jer. D.

Οὐχ οὕτως· ἰδοὺ προστίθημί σε πρὸς τοὺς πατέρας σου, καὶ συναχθήσῃ εἰς τὸν τάφον σου ἐν εἰρήνῃ, καὶ οὐκ ὀφθήσεται ἐν τοῖς ὀφθαλμοῖς σου ἐν πᾶσι τοῖς κακοῖς οἷς ἐγώ εἰμι ἐπάγω ἐπὶ τὸν τόπον τοῦτον.
