Ver. 1. A stater. It is the same as a sicle or shekel. Ch. — As it is in Heb. and Sept. — Bushel, or "measure," (H.) above 9 pints. — Gate, where the market place commonly was. C.

7:2 Respondens unus de ducibus, super cujus manum rex incumbebat, homini Dei, ait : Si Dominus fecerit etiam cataractas in caelo, numquid poterit esse quod loqueris ? Qui ait : Videbis oculis tuis, et inde non comedes.
*H Then one of the lords, upon whose hand the king leaned, answering the man of God, said: If the Lord should make flood-gates in heaven, can that possibly be which thou sayest? And he said: Thou shalt see it with thy eyes, but shalt not eat thereof.

If corn should fall with the same abundance as water does from the cataracts of the Nile; or, Heb. "if the Lord should make windows," &c. to pour it down, (C.) could it possibly be so cheap? 7:3 Quatuor ergo viri erant leprosi juxta introitum portae : qui dixerunt ad invicem : Quid hic esse volumus donec moriamur ?
*H Now there were four lepers, at the entering in of the gate: and they said one to another: What mean we to stay here till we die?
Ver. 3. Lepers. They were excluded from society, though the laws of religion were ill observed in Israel. The Rabbins say, these four were Giezi and his three sons. C. — But this is without foundation, (H.) as Giezi was not yet a leper. C. viii. 5. — Salien places that judgment two years later. H.
Καὶ τέσσαρες ἄνδρες ἦσαν λεπροὶ παρὰ τὴν θύραν τῆς πόλεως, καὶ εἶπεν ἀνὴρ πρὸς τὸν πλησίον αὐτοῦ, τί ἡμεῖς καθήμεθα ὧδε ἕως ἀποθάνωμεν;
וְ/אַרְבָּעָ֧ה אֲנָשִׁ֛ים הָי֥וּ מְצֹרָעִ֖ים פֶּ֣תַח הַ/שָּׁ֑עַר וַ/יֹּֽאמְרוּ֙ אִ֣ישׁ אֶל רֵעֵ֔/הוּ מָ֗ה אֲנַ֛חְנוּ יֹשְׁבִ֥ים פֹּ֖ה עַד מָֽתְנוּ
7:4 sive ingredi voluerimus civitatem, fame moriemur : sive manserimus hic, moriendum nobis est : venite ergo, et transfugiamus ad castra Syriae : si pepercerint nobis, vivemus : si autem occidere voluerint, nihilominus moriemur.
If we will enter into the city, we shall die with the famine: and if we will remain here, we must also die: come therefore, and let us run over to the camp of the Syrians. If they spare us, we shall live: but if they kill us, we shall but die.
Ἐὰν εἴπωμεν, εἰσέλθωμεν εἰς τὴν πόλιν, καὶ ὁ λιμὸς ἐν τῇ πόλει, καὶ ἀποθανούμεθα ἐκεῖ· καὶ ἐὰν καθίσωμεν ὧδε, καὶ ἀποθανούμεθα· καὶ νῦν δεῦτε, καὶ ἐμπεσωμεν εἰς τὴν παρεμβολὴν Συρίας· ἐὰν ζωογονήσωσιν ἡμᾶς, καὶ ζησόμεθα· καὶ ἐὰν θανατώσωσιν ἡμᾶς, καὶ ἀποθανούμεθα.

7:5 Surrexerunt ergo vesperi, ut venirent ad castra Syriae. Cumque venissent ad principium castrorum Syriae, nullum ibidem repererunt.
*H So they arose in the evening, to go to the Syrian camp. And when they were come to the first part of the camp of the Syrians, they found no man there.

7:6 Siquidem Dominus sonitum audiri fecerat in castris Syriae, curruum, et equorum, et exercitus plurimi : dixeruntque ad invicem : Ecce mercede conduxit adversum nos rex Israel reges Hethaeorum et Aegyptiorum, et venerunt super nos.
*H For the Lord had made them hear, in the camp of Syria, the noise of chariots, and of horses, and of a very great army: and they said one to another: Behold, the king of Israel hath hired against us the kings of the Hethites, and of the Egyptians; and they are come upon us.
Ver. 6. Hethites. Sept. "Chetteans." Joseph. "the islands" of Cyprus, &c. He seems to have read Cethim in the text, as they peopled Cyprus. C. — See Jer. ii. 10. M. — These Hethites seem to have dwelt in the stony Arabia, (Judg. i. 26.) or in Syria. H. — Solomon had connexions with them, 3 K. x. 29. Καὶ Κύριος ἀκουστὴν ἐποίησε παρεμβολὴν τὴν Συρίας φωνὴν ἅρματος καὶ φωνὴν ἵππου, φωνὴν δυνάμεως μεγάλης· καὶ εἶπεν ἀνὴρ πρὸς τὸν ἀδελφὸν αὐτοῦ, νῦν ἐμισθώσατο ἐφʼ ἡμᾶς ὁ βασιλεὺς Ἰσραὴλ τοὺς βασιλέας τῶν Χετταίων καὶ τοὺς βασιλέας Αἰγύπτου τοῦ ἐλθεῖν ἐφʼ ἡμᾶς.

7:7 Surrexerunt ergo, et fugerunt in tenebris, et dereliquerunt tentoria sua, et equos et asinos, in castris, fugeruntque animas tantum suas salvare cupientes.
Wherefore they arose, and fled away in the dark, and left their tents, and their horses and asses in the camp, and fled, desiring to save their lives.
Καὶ ἀνέστησαν καὶ ἀπέδρασαν ἐν τῷ σκότει καὶ ἐγκατέλιπον τὰς σκηνὰς αὐτῶν, καὶ τοὺς ἵππους αὐτῶν, καὶ τοὺς ὄνους αὐτῶν ἐν τῇ παρεμβολῇ ὡς ἔστι, καὶ ἔφυγον πρὸς τὴν ψυχὴν ἑαυτῶν.

7:8 Igitur cum venissent leprosi illi ad principium castrorum, ingressi sunt unum tabernaculum, et comederunt et biberunt : tuleruntque inde argentum, et aurum, et vestes, et abierunt, et absconderunt : et rursum reversi sunt ad aliud tabernaculum, et inde similiter auferentes absconderunt.
So when these lepers were come to the beginning of the camp, they went into one tent, and ate and drank: and they took from thence silver, and gold, and raiment, and went, and hid it: and they came again, and went into another tent, and carried from thence in like manner, and hid it.
Καὶ εἰσῆλθον οἱ λεπροὶ οὗτοι ἕως μέρους τῆς παρεμβολῆς, καὶ εἰσῆλθον εἰς σκηνὴν μίαν, καὶ ἔφαγον, καὶ ἔπιον, καὶ ἦραν ἐκεῖθεν ἀργύριον, καὶ χρυσίον, καὶ ἱματισμόν· καὶ ἐπορεύθησαν, καὶ ἐπέστρεψαν ἐκεῖθεν, καὶ εἰσῆλθον εἰς σκηνὴν ἄλλην, καὶ ἔλαβον ἐκεῖθεν καὶ ἐπορεύθησαν, καὶ κατέκρυψαν.

7:9 Dixeruntque ad invicem : Non recte facimus : haec enim dies boni nuntii est. Si tacuerimus et noluerimus nuntiare usque mane, sceleris arguemur : venite, eamus, et nuntiemus in aula regis.
*H Then they said one to another: We do not well: for this is a day of good tidings. If we hold our peace, and do not tell it till the morning, we shall be charged with a crime: come, let us go, and tell it in the king's court.
Ver. 9. Crime, and punished. Heb. "iniquity shall find us." Citizens are bound to give notice of what may tend to the common good. C. — Court. Not in person, but by means of others. M.

7:10 Cumque venissent ad portam civitatis, narraverunt eis, dicentes : Ivimus ad castra Syriae, et nullum ibidem reperimus hominem, nisi equos et asinos alligatos, et fixa tentoria.
*H So they came to the gate of the city, and told them, saying: We went to the camp of the Syrians, and we found no man there, but horses, and asses tied, and the tents standing.

7:11 Ierunt ergo portarii, et nuntiaverunt in palatio regis intrinsecus.
Then the guards of the gate went, and told it within in the king's palace.
Καὶ ἐβόησαν οἱ θυρωροὶ, καὶ ἀνήγγειλαν εἰς τὸν οἶκον τοῦ βασιλέως ἔσω.
וַ/יִּקְרָ֖א הַ/שֹּֽׁעֲרִ֑ים וַ/יַּגִּ֕ידוּ בֵּ֥ית הַ/מֶּ֖לֶךְ פְּנִֽימָה
7:12 Qui surrexit nocte, et ait ad servos suos : Dico vobis quid fecerint nobis Syri : sciunt quia fame laboramus, et idcirco egressi sunt de castris, et latitant in agris, dicentes : Cum egressi fuerint de civitate, capiemus eos vivos, et tunc civitatem ingredi poterimus.
And he arose in the night, and said to his servants: I tell you what the Syrians have done to us: They know that we suffer great famine, and therefore they are gone out of the camp, and lie hid in the fields, saying: When they come out of the city, we shall take them alive, and then we may get into the city.
Καὶ ἀνέστη ὁ βασιλεὺς νυκτὸς, καὶ εἶπε πρὸς τοὺς παῖδας αὐτοῦ, ἀναγγελῶ δὴ ὑμῖν ἃ ἐποίησεν ἡμῖν Συρία· ἔγνωσαν ὅτι πεινῶμεν ἡμεῖς, καὶ ἐξῆλθαν ἐκ τῆς παρεμβολῆς καὶ ἐκρύβησαν ἐν τῷ ἀγρῷ, λέγοντες, ὅτι ἐξελεύσονται ἐκ τῆς πόλεως, καὶ συλληψόμεθα αὐτοὺς ζῶντας, καὶ εἰς τὴν πόλιν εἰσελευσόμεθα.

7:13 Respondit autem unus servorum ejus : Tollamus quinque equos qui remanserunt in urbe (quia ipsi tantum sunt in universa multitudine Israel, alii enim consumpti sunt), et mittentes, explorare poterimus.
*H And one of his servants answered: Let us take the five horses that are remaining in the city (because there are no more in the whole multitude of Israel, for the rest are consumed), and let us send and see.
Ver. 13. Consumed, for food. M. — Sept. "Let them take five of the horses left. Those which are left here, behold they are to all the remaining multitude of Israel, and let us send them." They have read in a different manner from the present Heb. which has, "Let them take five of the horses there remaining; behold they are like all the multitude of Israel which is left; they are like all the multitude of Israel who are lost; let us send them." Arab. "Let us send thither five horsemen who remain; if they escape, we shall look upon them as those Israelites who continue alive; if they perish, they well be numbered with the other Israelites who are dead." Both horses and horsemen were dreadfully lean, and they could not expect a better fate than those already consumed by famine. C. — The truth of the report ought at least to be fully ascertained. By following the timid advice of the king no prospect of redress appeared. At last the king consented to send two horsemen. H. Sept. v. 14. Jun. &c.

7:14 Adduxerunt ergo duos equos, misitque rex in castra Syrorum, dicens : Ite, et videte.
*H They brought therefore two horses, and the king sent into the camp of the Syrians, saying: Go, and see.

And they went after them, as far as the Jordan: and behold, all the way was full of garments, and vessels, which the Syrians had cast away, in their fright, and the messengers returned, and told the king.
Καὶ ἐπορεύθησαν ὀπίσω αὐτῶν ἕως τοῦ Ἰορδάνου. καὶ ἰδοὺ πᾶσα ἡ ὁδὸς πλήρης ἱματίων καὶ σκευῶν ὧν ἔῤῥιψε Συρία ἐν τῷ θαμβεῖσθαι αὐτούς· καὶ ἐπέστρεψαν οἱ ἄγγελοι καὶ ἀνήγγειλαν τῷ βασιλεῖ.
וַ/יֵּלְכ֣וּ אַחֲרֵי/הֶם֮ עַד הַ/יַּרְדֵּן֒ וְ/הִנֵּ֣ה כָל הַ/דֶּ֗רֶךְ מְלֵאָ֤ה בְגָדִים֙ וְ/כֵלִ֔ים אֲשֶׁר הִשְׁלִ֥יכוּ אֲרָ֖ם ב/החפז/ם בְּ/חָפְזָ֑/ם וַ/יָּשֻׁ֨בוּ֙ הַ/מַּלְאָכִ֔ים וַ/יַּגִּ֖דוּ לַ/מֶּֽלֶךְ
7:16 Et egressus populus diripuit castra Syriae : factusque est modius similae statere uno, et duo modii hordei statere uno, juxta verbum Domini.
And the people going out, pillaged the camp of the Syrians: and a bushel of fine flour was sold for a stater, and two bushels of barley for a stater, according to the word of the Lord.
Καὶ ἐξῆλθεν ὁ λαὸς καὶ διήρπασεν τὴν παρεμβολὴν Συρίας· καὶ ἐγένετο μέτρον σεμισάλεως σίκλου, κατὰ τὸ ῥῆμα Κυρίου, καὶ δίμετρον κριθῶν σίκλου.
וַ/יֵּצֵ֣א הָ/עָ֔ם וַ/יָּבֹ֕זּוּ אֵ֖ת מַחֲנֵ֣ה אֲרָ֑ם וַ/יְהִ֨י סְאָה סֹ֜לֶת בְּ/שֶׁ֗קֶל וְ/סָאתַ֧יִם שְׂעֹרִ֛ים בְּ/שֶׁ֖קֶל כִּ/דְבַ֥ר יְהוָֽה
7:17 Porro rex ducem illum, in cujus manu incumbebat, constituit ad portam : quem conculcavit turba in introitu portae, et mortuus est, juxta quod locutus fuerat vir Dei, quando descenderat rex ad eum.
*H And the king appointed that lord on whose hand he leaned, to stand at the gate: and the people trod upon him in the entrance of the gate; and he died, as the man of God had said, when the king came down to him.

Καὶ ὁ βασιλεὺς κατέστησε τὸν τριστάτην ἐφʼ ὃν ὁ βασιλεὺς ἐπανεπαύετο τῇ χειρὶ αὐτοῦ ἐπὶ τῆς πυλῆς· καὶ συνεπάτησεν αὐτὸν ὁ λαὸς ἐν τῇ πύλῃ, καὶ ἀπέθανε καθὰ ἐλάλησεν ὁ ἄνθρωπος τοῦ Θεοῦ, ὃς ἐλάλησεν ἐν τῷ καταβῆναι τὸν ἄγγελον πρὸς αὐτόν.
וְ/הַ/מֶּלֶךְ֩ הִפְקִ֨יד אֶת הַ/שָּׁלִ֜ישׁ אֲשֶׁר נִשְׁעָ֤ן עַל יָד/וֹ֙ עַל הַ/שַּׁ֔עַר וַ/יִּרְמְסֻ֧/הוּ הָ/עָ֛ם בַּ/שַּׁ֖עַר וַ/יָּמֹ֑ת כַּ/אֲשֶׁ֤ר דִּבֶּר֙ אִ֣ישׁ הָ/אֱלֹהִ֔ים אֲשֶׁ֣ר דִּבֶּ֔ר בְּ/רֶ֥דֶת הַ/מֶּ֖לֶךְ אֵלָֽי/ו
7:18 Factumque est secundum sermonem viri Dei quem dixerat regi, quando ait : Duo modii hordei statere uno erunt, et modius similae statere uno, hoc eodem tempore cras in porta Samariae :
And it came to pass, according to the word of the man of God, which he spoke to the king, when he said: Two bushels of barley shall be for a stater, and a bushel of fine flour for a stater, at this very time tomorrow, in the gate of Samaria.
Καὶ ἐγένετο καθὰ ἐλάλησεν Ἑλισαιὲ πρὸς τὸν βασιλέα, λέγων, δίμετρον κριθῆς σίκλου καὶ μέτρον σεμιδάλεως σίκλου· καὶ ἔσται ὡς ἡ ὥρα αὔριον ἐν τῇ πύλῃ Σαμαρείας.
וַ/יְהִ֗י כְּ/דַבֵּר֙ אִ֣ישׁ הָ/אֱלֹהִ֔ים אֶל הַ/מֶּ֖לֶךְ לֵ/אמֹ֑ר סָאתַ֨יִם שְׂעֹרִ֜ים בְּ/שֶׁ֗קֶל וּֽ/סְאָה סֹ֨לֶת֙ בְּ/שֶׁ֔קֶל יִהְיֶה֙ כָּ/עֵ֣ת מָחָ֔ר בְּ/שַׁ֖עַר שֹׁמְרֽוֹן
7:19 quando responderat dux ille viro Dei, et dixerat : Etiamsi Dominus fecerit cataractas in caelo, numquid poterit fieri quod loqueris ? Et dixit ei : Videbis oculis tuis, et inde non comedes.
When that lord answered the man of God, and said: Although the Lord should make flood-gates in heaven, could this come to pass which thou sayest? And he said to him: Thou shalt see it with thy eyes, and shalt not eat thereof.
Καὶ ἀπεκρίθη ὁ τριστάτης τῷ Ἑλισαιὲ, καὶ εἶπεν, ἰδοὺ Κύριος ποιεῖ καταράκτας ἐν τῷ οὐρανῷ, μὴ ἔσται τὸ ῥῆμα τοῦτο; καὶ εἶπεν Ἑλισαιὲ, ἰδοὺ ὄψει τοῖς ὀφθαλμοῖς σου, καὶ ἐκεῖθεν οὐ μὴ φάγῃ.
וַ/יַּ֨עַן הַ/שָּׁלִ֜ישׁ אֶת אִ֣ישׁ הָ/אֱלֹהִים֮ וַ/יֹּאמַר֒ וְ/הִנֵּ֣ה יְהוָ֗ה עֹשֶׂ֤ה אֲרֻבּוֹת֙ בַּ/שָּׁמַ֔יִם הֲ/יִהְיֶ֖ה כַּ/דָּבָ֣ר הַ/זֶּ֑ה וַ/יֹּ֗אמֶר הִנְּ/ךָ֤ רֹאֶה֙ בְּ/עֵינֶ֔י/ךָ וּ/מִ/שָּׁ֖ם לֹ֥א תֹאכֵֽל
7:20 Evenit ergo ei sicut praedictum fuerat, et conculcavit eum populus in porta, et mortuus est.
And so it fell out to him, as it was foretold, and the people trod upon him in the gate, and he died.
Καὶ ἐγένετο οὕτως, καὶ συνεπάτησαν αὐτὸν ὁ λαὸς ἐν τῇ πύλῃ, καὶ ἀπέθανε.
