Καὶ ἐγένετο ἐν τῷ τετάρτῳ ἔτει ἐπὶ Δαρείου τοῦ βασιλέως, ἐγένετο λόγος Κυρίου πρὸς Ζαχαρίαν τετράδι τοῦ μηνὸς τοῦ ἐννάτου, ὅς ἐστι Χασελεύ.

7:2 Et miserunt ad domum Dei Sarasar et Rogommelech, et viri qui erant cum eo, ad deprecandam faciem Domini :
*H When Sarasar, and Rogommelech, and the men that were with him, sent to the house of God, to entreat the face of the Lord:


Ver. 2. And. Sept. from; (S. Jer.) or, "to Bethel sent Sarasar and Arbesesar, the king, and his men, to render the face of the Lord propitious." H. — These were Persian governors under Darius, (S. Jer.) or Cutheans, (Theod.) or Jews, at a distance from the temple, though in the country. M. —But they seem rather to be some who had not returned. C.

Καὶ ἐξαπέστειλεν εἰς Βαιθὴλ, Σαρασὰρ καὶ Ἀρβεσεὲρ ὁ βασιλεὺς, καὶ οἱ ἄνδρες αὐτοῦ, καὶ ἐξιλάσασθαι τὸν Κύριον,
וַ/יִּשְׁלַח֙ בֵּֽית אֵ֔ל שַׂר אֶ֕צֶר וְ/רֶ֥גֶם מֶ֖לֶךְ וַֽ/אֲנָשָׁ֑י/ו לְ/חַלּ֖וֹת אֶת פְּנֵ֥י יְהוָֽה
7:3 ut dicerent sacerdotibus domus Domini exercituum, et prophetis, loquentes : Numquid flendum est mihi in quinto mense, vel sanctificare me debeo, sicut jam feci multis annis ?
*H To speak to the priests of the house of the Lord of hosts, and to the prophets, saying: Must I weep in the fifth month, or must I sanctify myself as I have now done for many years?


Ver. 3. The fifth month. They fasted on the tenth day of the fifth month; because on that day the temple was burnt. Therefore they inquire whether they are to continue that fast after the temple is rebuilt. See this query answered v. 19 of the following chap. Ch. — The third of the seventh month (v. 5) was also a fast, on account of the death of Godolias, (C.) during the captivity. 4 K. xxv. 8. 25. W. — Sept. "Has the sanctification entered hither in the fifth month, as they (or I) have done?" &c. H. — Fasting and lamentation are styled sanctification, because they promote it; curatos quoque sanctificat; (S. Jer.) if the proper conditions be observed. H.

And the word of the Lord of hosts came to me, saying:
Καὶ ἐγένετο λόγος Κυρίου τῶν δυνάμεων πρὸς ἐμὲ, λέγων,
וַ/יְהִ֛י דְּבַר יְהוָ֥ה צְבָא֖וֹת אֵלַ֥/י לֵ/אמֹֽר
7:5 Loquere ad omnem populum terrae, et ad sacerdotes, dicens : Cum jejunaretis, et plangeretis in quinto et septimo per hos septuaginta annos, numquid jejunium jejunastis mihi ?

Ver. 5. Years, from the ruin of the temple till the fourth of Darius. — Unto me? Did you grieve for the injury done to me; or was your sorrow caused by your own loss? The prophet gives not a direct answer; but sufficiently shews that exterior works of themselves are of little value. Whether the Jews entered into his sentiments or not, they still observe these fasts, though he said they should be changed into days of rejoicing. C. viii. 19. C. — The fast was good, but imperfect, wanting works of charity. S. Greg. W.

εἰπὸν πρὸς ἅπαντα τὸν λαὸν τῆς γῆς, καὶ πρὸς τοὺς ἱερεῖς, λέγων, ἐὰν νηστεύσητε ἢ κόψησθε ἐν ταῖς πέμπταις ἢ ἐν ταῖς ἑβδόμαις, καὶ ἰδοὺ ἑβδομήκοντα ἔτη, μὴ νηστείαν νενηστεύκατέ μοι;
אֱמֹר֙ אֶל כָּל עַ֣ם הָ/אָ֔רֶץ וְ/אֶל הַ/כֹּהֲנִ֖ים לֵ/אמֹ֑ר כִּֽי צַמְתֶּ֨ם וְ/סָפ֜וֹד בַּ/חֲמִישִׁ֣י וּ/בַ/שְּׁבִיעִ֗י וְ/זֶה֙ שִׁבְעִ֣ים שָׁנָ֔ה הֲ/צ֥וֹם צַמְתֻּ֖/נִי אָֽנִי
7:6 et cum comedistis et bibistis, numquid non vobis comedistis et vobismetipsis bibistis ?
*H And when you did eat and drink, did you not eat for yourselves, and drink for yourselves?


Ver. 6. Yourselves, to gratify the senses more than from necessity, and without doing it for God's glory. H.

Καὶ ἐὰν φάγητε ἢ πίητε, οὐκ ὑμεῖς ἔσθετε καὶ πίνετε;
וְ/כִ֥י תֹאכְל֖וּ וְ/כִ֣י תִשְׁתּ֑וּ הֲ/ל֤וֹא אַתֶּם֙ הָ/אֹ֣כְלִ֔ים וְ/אַתֶּ֖ם הַ/שֹּׁתִֽים
7:7 numquid non sunt verba quae locutus est Dominus in manu prophetarum priorum, cum adhuc Jerusalem habitaretur ut esset opulenta, ipsa et urbes in circuitu ejus, et ad austrum, et in campestribus habitaretur ?
*H Are not these the words which the Lord spoke by the hand of the former prophets, when Jerusalem as yet was inhabited, and was wealthy, both itself and the cities round about it, and there were inhabitants towards the south, and in the plain?


Ver. 7. Prophets. He alludes to Is. lviii. 3. See also Jer. xiv. 12. Joel ii. 12. The Jews were always too much attached to the letter, without minding the spirit of the law, being zealous for corporal rather than for spiritual works. — South. Several of these cities were occupied by the Idumeans. — Plain, or Sephala, which afterwards became flourishing and populous. C.

Οὐχ οὗτοι οἱ λόγοι, οὓς ἐλάλησε Κύριος ἐν χερσὶ τῶν προφητῶν τῶν ἔμπροσθεν, ὅτε ἦν Ἱερουσαλὴμ κατοικουμένη, καὶ εὐθηνοῦσα, καὶ αἱ πόλεις κυκλόθεν αὐτῆς, καὶ ἡ ὀρεινὴ καὶ ἡ πεδινὴ κατῳκεῖτο;

7:8 Et factum est verbum Domini ad Zachariam, dicens :
And the word of the Lord came to Zacharias, saying:
Καὶ ἐγένετο λόγος Κυρίου πρὸς Ζαχαρίαν, λέγων,

7:9 Haec ait Dominus exercituum, dicens : Judicium verum judicate, et misericordiam et miserationes facite, unusquisque cum fratre suo.

Ver. 9. Judgment. Avoid sinning, when you fast. W.

7:10 Et viduam, et pupillum, et advenam, et pauperem nolite calumniari : et malum vir fratri suo non cogitet in corde suo.

Ver. 10. Devise. Sept. "wickedly remember in your hearts each one the evil of his brother." H.

καὶ χήραν, καὶ ὀρφανὸν, καὶ προσήλυτον, καὶ πένητα μὴ καταδυναστεύετε, καὶ κακίαν ἕκαστος τοῦ ἀδελφοῦ αὐτοῦ μὴ μνησικακείτω ἐν ταῖς καρδίαις ὑμῶν.
וְ/אַלְמָנָ֧ה וְ/יָת֛וֹם גֵּ֥ר וְ/עָנִ֖י אַֽל תַּעֲשֹׁ֑קוּ וְ/רָעַת֙ אִ֣ישׁ אָחִ֔י/ו אַֽל תַּחְשְׁב֖וּ בִּ/לְבַבְ/כֶֽם
7:11 Et noluerunt attendere, et averterunt scapulam recedentem, et aures suas aggravaverunt ne audirent.
*H But they would not hearken, and they turned away the shoulder to depart: and they stopped their ears, not to hear.


Ver. 11. Depart, so to leave the burden on their partner. Heb. C. — Lit. "giving way;" recedentem. Sixt. V. recedentes. Sept. "they gave a contemptuous back," (H.) like a slave, whom the whip cannot correct.

Καὶ ἠπείθησαν τοῦ προσέχειν, καὶ ἔδωκαν νῶτον παραφρονοῦντα, καὶ τὰ ὦτα αὐτῶν ἐβάρυναν τοῦ μὴ εἰσακούειν.
וַ/יְמָאֲנ֣וּ לְ/הַקְשִׁ֔יב וַ/יִּתְּנ֥וּ כָתֵ֖ף סֹרָ֑רֶת וְ/אָזְנֵי/הֶ֖ם הִכְבִּ֥ידוּ מִ/שְּׁמֽוֹעַ
7:12 Et cor suum posuerunt ut adamantem, ne audirent legem, et verba quae misit Dominus exercituum in spiritu suo per manum prophetarum priorum : et facta est indignatio magna a Domino exercituum.
*H And they made their heart as the adamant stone, lest they should hear the law, and the words which the Lord of hosts sent in his spirit by the hand of the former prophets: so a great indignation came from Lord of hosts.


Ver. 12. As, &c. Heb. "of Samir;" a stone used to polish jewels. Sept. "disobedient."

Καὶ τὴν καρδίαν αὐτῶν ἔταξαν ἀπειθῆ τοῦ μὴ εἰσακούειν τοῦ νόμου μου, καὶ τοὺς λόγους, οὓς ἐξαπέστειλε Κύριος παντοκράτωρ ἐν πνεύματι αὐτοῦ ἐν χερσὶ τῶν προφητῶν τῶν ἔμπροσθεν· καὶ ἐγένετο ὀργὴ μεγάλη παρὰ Κυρίου παντοκράτορος.
וְ/לִבָּ֞/ם שָׂ֣מוּ שָׁמִ֗יר מִ֠/שְּׁמוֹעַ אֶת הַ/תּוֹרָ֤ה וְ/אֶת הַ/דְּבָרִים֙ אֲשֶׁ֨ר שָׁלַ֜ח יְהוָ֤ה צְבָאוֹת֙ בְּ/רוּח֔/וֹ בְּ/יַ֖ד הַ/נְּבִיאִ֣ים הָ/רִֽאשֹׁנִ֑ים וַֽ/יְהִי֙ קֶ֣צֶף גָּד֔וֹל מֵ/אֵ֖ת יְהוָ֥ה צְבָאֽוֹת
7:13 Et factum est sicut locutus est, et non audierunt : sic clamabunt et non exaudiam, dicit Dominus exercituum.
*H And it came to pass that as he spoke, and they heard not: so shall they cry, and I will not hear, saith the Lord of hosts.


Ver. 13. So shall. It seems the past time would be preferable; as Theodoret, S. Cyr. &c. understand it. C. — Yet the Jews, whom the prophet addressed, were also reprehensible; and they or their posterity felt the effects of God's indignation, when he scattered them throughout the world, as we see at present. Sept. have the future; but Prot. the past tense, "they cried," &c. H.

Καὶ ἔσται, ὃν τρόπον εἶπε, καὶ οὐκ εἰσήκουσαν, οὕτως κεκράξονται, καὶ οὐ μὴ εἰσακούσω, λέγει Κύριος παντοκράτωρ.
וַ/יְהִ֥י כַ/אֲשֶׁר קָרָ֖א וְ/לֹ֣א שָׁמֵ֑עוּ כֵּ֤ן יִקְרְאוּ֙ וְ/לֹ֣א אֶשְׁמָ֔ע אָמַ֖ר יְהוָ֥ה צְבָאֽוֹת
7:14 Et dispersi eos per omnia regna quae nesciunt : et terra desolata est ab eis, eo quod non esset transiens et revertens : et posuerunt terram desiderabilem in desertum.
And I dispersed them throughout all kingdoms, which they know not: and the land was left desolate behind them, so that no man passed through or returned: and they changed the delightful land into a wilderness.
Καὶ ἐκβαλῶ αὐτοὺς εἰς πάντα τὰ ἔθνη, ἃ οὐκ ἔγνωσαν· καὶ ἡ γῆ ἀφανισθήσεται κατόπισθεν αὐτῶν ἐκ διοδεύοντος καὶ ἐξ ἀναστρέφοντος· καὶ ἔταξαν γῆν ἐκλεκτὴν εἰς ἀφανισμόν.
