12:1 In finem. Psalmus David. [Usquequo, Domine, oblivisceris me in finem ? usquequo avertis faciem tuam a me ?
*H Unto the end, a psalm for David. How long, O Lord, wilt thou forget me unto the end? how long dost thou turn away thy face from me?

Ver. 1. Me? These expressions are figurative. God seems displeased: but it is often for our greater good. Some explain this of David, Ezechias, the captives, &c. It may be applied to every afflicted soul, which places her whole trust in God. C.

12_2 Ἕως τίνος θήσομαι βουλὰς ἐν ψυχῇ μου, ὀδύνας ἐν καρδίᾳ μου ἡμέρας; ἕως πότε ὑψωθήσεται ὁ ἐχθρός μου ἐπʼ ἐμέ;
12:2 quamdiu ponam consilia in anima mea ; dolorem in corde meo per diem ?
*H How long shall I take counsels in my soul, sorrow in my heart all the day?

Ver. 2. Day; frequently. W. — Sept. adds, "and night." C. — These cares and perplexities arise from persecutions and from man's weakness. W.

12:3 usquequo exaltabitur inimicus meus super me ?
*H How long shall my enemy be exalted over Me?

Ver. 3. Enemy; Saul, &c. or the devil. S. Aug. C.

12:4 Respice, et exaudi me, Domine Deus meus. Illumina oculos meos, ne umquam obdormiam in morte ;
*H Consider, and hear me, O Lord, my God. Enlighten my eyes, that I never sleep in death:

Ver. 4. Death, by mortal sin, (W.) or through excessive sorrow. Jer. li. 39. Shew me thy favour, (C.) and I shall be secure. Sleep is represented as nearly related to death. Iliad xiv.

12:5 nequando dicat inimicus meus : Praevalui adversus eum. Qui tribulant me exsultabunt si motus fuero ;
Lest at any time my enemy say: I have prevailed against him. They that trouble me, will rejoice when I am moved:
12:6 ego autem in misericordia tua speravi. Exsultabit cor meum in salutari tuo.
But I have trusted in thy mercy. My heart shall rejoice in thy salvation: I will sing to the Lord, who giveth me good things: yea, I will sing to the name of the Lord, the most high.
