7:1 [Cum sanare vellem Israel, revelata est iniquitas Ephraim, et malitia Samariae, quia operati sunt mendacium ; et fur ingressus est spolians, latrunculus foris.
*H When I would have healed Israel, the iniquity of Ephraim was discovered, and the wickedness of Samaria, for they have committed falsehood, and the thief is come in to steal, the robber is without.


Ver. 1. Israel. God divided the kingdom, that by this chastisement the people might be converted. But Jeroboam set up calves, and caused them to grow worse. W. — How often did God send his prophets to reclaim them! — Without. Most of the kings were of this stamp, while foreign nations invaded the land.

Ἐν τῷ ἰάσασθαί με τὸν Ἰσραὴλ, καὶ ἀποκαλυφθήσεται ἡ ἀδικία Ἐφραὶμ, καὶ ἡ κακία Σαμαρείας, ὅτι εἰργάσαντο ψευδῆ· καὶ κλέπτης πρὸς αὐτὸν εἰσελεύσεται, ἐκδιδύσκων λῃστὴς ἐν τῇ ὁδῷ αὐτοῦ,

7:2 Et ne forte dicant in cordibus suis, omnem malitiam eorum me recordatum, nunc circumdederunt eos adinventiones suae : coram facie mea factae sunt.
*H And lest they may say in their hearts, that I remember all their wickedness: their own devices now have beset them about, they have been done before my face.


Ver. 2. Face. I do not search (C.) into their past lives; they sin publicly, and without ceasing. I have been too indulgent. H.

ὅπως συνᾴδωσιν ὡς ᾄοντες τῇ καρδίᾳ αὐτῶν· πάσας τὰς κακίας αὐτῶν ἐμνήσθην· νῦν ἐκύκλωσαν αὐτοὺς τὰ διαβούλια αὐτῶν, ἀπέναντι τοῦ προσώπου μου ἐγένοντο.

7:3 In malitia sua laetificaverunt regem, et in mendaciis suis principes.
*H They have made the king glad with their wickedness: and the princes with their lies.


Ver. 3. Glad, &c. To please Jeroboam and their other kings, they have given themselves up to the worship of idols, which are mere falsehood and lies. Ch. — We do not find one good king of Israel. C. — But Jeroboam principally caused Israel to sin. H. — His infernal policy changed the religion of his subjects.

Ἐν ταῖς κακίαις αὐτῶν εὔφραναν βασιλεῖς, καὶ ἐν τοῖς ψεύδεσιν αὐτῶν ἄρχοντας.
בְּ/רָעָתָ֖/ם יְשַׂמְּחוּ מֶ֑לֶךְ וּ/בְ/כַחֲשֵׁי/הֶ֖ם שָׂרִֽים
7:4 Omnes adulterantes, quasi clibanus succensus a coquente ; quievit paululum civitas a commistione fermenti, donec fermentaretur totum.
*H They are all adulterers, like an oven heated by the baker: the city rested a little from the mingling of the leaven, till the whole was leavened.


Ver. 4. Leaven. Jeroboam invited the people simply to a feast, and used no violence to make them adopt his novelties. But they soon prevailed, and brought on ruin. The cake, or whole nation, was burnt, (v. 8.) as well as the princes. v. 7. C.

Πάντες μοιχεύοντες ὡς κλίβανος καιόμενος εἰς πέψιν κατακαύματος ἀπὸ τῆς φλογὸς, ἀπὸ φυράσεως στέατος, ἕως τοῦ ζυμωθῆναι αὐτό.

7:5 Dies regis nostri : coeperunt principes furere a vino ; extendit manum suam cum illusoribus.
*H The day of our king, the princes began to be mad with wine: he stretched out his hand with scorners.


Ver. 5. Princes. The chief men joined in the schism and idolatry. W. — Mad, with drinking at the king's coronation, or at his coming to the crown. C. — Bacchus presents three cups to the wise; the fourth is the cup of petulance, the fifth of shouts, the sixth of debauchery, &c. Athen. Dipsc. ii. 1. Eccli. xxxi. 38. — Scorners. Sept. "pestilent people," who turn religion and piety to ridicule. Instead of repressing them, the king admits them to favour.

Ἡμέραι τῶν βασιλέων ὑμῶν, ἤρξαντο οἱ ἄρχοντες θυμοῦσθαι ἐξ οἴνου, ἐξέτεινε τὴν χεῖρα αὐτοῦ μετὰ λοιμῶν.
י֣וֹם מַלְכֵּ֔/נוּ הֶחֱל֥וּ שָׂרִ֖ים חֲמַ֣ת מִ/יָּ֑יִן מָשַׁ֥ךְ יָד֖/וֹ אֶת לֹצְצִֽים
7:6 Quia applicuerunt quasi clibanum cor suum, cum insidiaretur eis ; tota nocte dormivit coquens eos : mane ipse succensus quasi ignis flammae.
*H Because they have applied their heart like an oven, when he laid snares for them: he slept all the night baking them, in the morning he himself was heated as a flaming fire.


Ver. 6. Them. Jeroboam seduces the subjects of the house of David, by indulging the passions of the great and small. He may then sleep; the poison gains ground. C. — But soon his own family will feel the direful effects of his policy. H.

Διότι ἀνεκαύθησαν ὡς κλίβανος αἱ καρδίαι αὐτῶν, ἐν τῷ καταράσσειν αὐτοὺς ὅλην τὴν νύκτα· ὕπνου Ἐφραὶμ ἐνεπλήσθη, πρωῒ ἐνεγενήθη, ἀνεκαύθη ὡς πυρὸς φέγγος.

7:7 Omnes calefacti sunt quasi clibanus, et devoraverunt judices suos : omnes reges eorum ceciderunt ; non est qui clamat in eis ad me.
*H They were all heated like an oven, and have devoured their judges: all their kings have fallen: there is none amongst them that calleth unto me.


Ver. 7. Judges, or rulers. Idolatry proved fatal to all. v. 3.

Πάντες ἐθερμάνθησαν ὡς κλίβανος, καὶ κατέφαγον τοὺς κριτὰς αὐτῶν· πάντες οἱ βασιλεῖς αὐτῶν ἔπεσαν, οὐκ ἦν ἐν αὐτοῖς ὁ ἐπικαλούμενος πρὸς μέ.
כֻּלָּ֤/ם יֵחַ֨מּוּ֙ כַּ/תַּנּ֔וּר וְ/אָכְל֖וּ אֶת שֹֽׁפְטֵי/הֶ֑ם כָּל מַלְכֵי/הֶ֣ם נָפָ֔לוּ אֵין קֹרֵ֥א בָ/הֶ֖ם אֵלָֽ/י
7:8 Ephraim in populis ipse commiscebatur ; Ephraim factus est subcinericius panis, qui non reversatur.
*H Ephraim himself is mixed among the nations: Ephraim is become as bread baked under the ashes, that is not turned.


Ver. 8. Mixed, like oil and flour. Heb. — Ashes. Thin cakes (C.) of this kind are used by the poor, in Spain, (Sanct.) and by the Arabs. Thevenot. Levant. xxxii. — Turned. There was no time allowed by the enemy, who came and took the Israelites away. C. — They became like other nations, and would not repent. W.

Ἐφραὶμ ἐν τοῖς λαοῖς αὐτοῦ συνεμίγνυτο, Ἐφραὶμ ἐγένετο ἐγκρυφίας, οὐ μεταστρεφόμενος.
אֶפְרַ֕יִם בָּ/עַמִּ֖ים ה֣וּא יִתְבּוֹלָ֑ל אֶפְרַ֛יִם הָיָ֥ה עֻגָ֖ה בְּלִ֥י הֲפוּכָֽה
7:9 Comederunt alieni robur ejus, et ipse nescivit ; sed et cani effusi sunt in eo, et ipse ignoravit.
*H Strangers have devoured his strength, and he knew it not: yea, grey hairs also are spread about upon him, and he is ignorant of it.


Ver. 9. Strangers: kings of Assyria, Damascus, &c. — Hairs. He is grown old in misery, and yet is insensible of it, and sees not that he will shortly cease to be a people. Is. vii. 8.

Κατέφαγον ἀλλότριοι τὴν ἰσχὺν αὐτοῦ, αὐτὸς δὲ οὐκ ἔγνω· καὶ πολιαὶ ἐξήνθησαν αὐτῷ, καὶ αὐτὸς οὐκ ἔγνω.
אָכְל֤וּ זָרִים֙ כֹּח֔/וֹ וְ/ה֖וּא לֹ֣א יָדָ֑ע גַּם שֵׂיבָה֙ זָ֣רְקָה בּ֔/וֹ וְ/ה֖וּא לֹ֥א יָדָֽע
7:10 Et humiliabitur superbia Israel in facie ejus ; nec reversi sunt ad Dominum Deum suum, et non quaesierunt eum in omnibus his.
*H And the pride of Israel shall be humbled before his face: and they have not returned to the Lord their God, nor have they sought him in all these.


Ver. 10. Humbled. Heb. "answer." C. v. 5. Pride is visible on his face, though he be so much reduced. C. — For all these sins Israel shall be severely punished. W.

Καὶ ταπεινωθήσεται ἡ ὕβρις Ἰσραὴλ εἰς πρόσωπον αὐτοῦ· καὶ οὐκ ἐπέστρεψαν πρὸς Κύριον τὸν Θεὸν αὐτῶν, καὶ οὐκ ἐξεζήτησαν αὐτὸν ἐν πᾶσι τούτοις.

7:11 Et factus est Ephraim quasi columba seducta non habens cor. Aegyptum invocabant ; ad Assyrios abierunt.
*H And Ephraim is become as a dove that is decoyed, not having a heart: they called upon Egypt, they went to the Assyrians.


Ver. 11. Decoyed. Heb. "stupid." C. iv. 11. The dove is the only bird which is not grieved at the loss of its young. S. Jer. — It returns to the same nest, though repeatedly robbed, forgetting past dangers. Theod. — Thus Israel is not reclaimed, though idolatry has so often proved its ruin. — Egypt. Jeroboam had returned thither, and at his return brought about a division of the kingdom. 3 K. xi. 40. Osee, the last king, applied to Sua, and this provoked the Assyrians to destroy the kingdom. They pretended that it was tributary to them, after Phul had been invited to assist Manahem for a thousand talents. 4 K. xv. 19. and xvii. 4. Thus was a worldly policy confounded.

Καὶ ἦν Ἐφραὶμ ὡς περιστερὰ ἄνους, οὐκ ἔχουσα καρδίαν· Αἴγυπτον ἐπεκαλεῖτο, καὶ εἰς Ἀσσυρίους ἐπορεύθησαν·
וַ/יְהִ֣י אֶפְרַ֔יִם כְּ/יוֹנָ֥ה פוֹתָ֖ה אֵ֣ין לֵ֑ב מִצְרַ֥יִם קָרָ֖אוּ אַשּׁ֥וּר הָלָֽכוּ
7:12 Et cum profecti fuerint, expandam super eos rete meum : quasi volucrem caeli detraham eos ; caedam eos secundum auditionem coetus eorum.
*H And when they shall go, I will spread my net upon them: I will bring them down as the fowl of the air, I will strike them as their congregation hath heard.


Ver. 12. Heard the menaces of Moses, (Deut. xxvii.) and of the prophets. 4 K. xxvii. 13. C. — Sept. "I will instruct (or chastise) them by the hearing of their misery," (H.) when it shall become the subject of conversation throughout the world.

Καθὼς ἂν πορεύωνται, ἐπιβαλῶ ἐπʼ αὐτοὺς τὸ δίκτυόν μου, καθὼς τὰ πετεινὰ τοῦ οὐρανοῦ κατάξω αὐτοὺς, παιδεύσω αὐτοὺς ἐν τῇ ἀκοῇ τῆς θλίψεως αὐτῶν.
כַּ/אֲשֶׁ֣ר יֵלֵ֗כוּ אֶפְר֤וֹשׂ עֲלֵי/הֶם֙ רִשְׁתִּ֔/י כְּ/ע֥וֹף הַ/שָּׁמַ֖יִם אֽוֹרִידֵ֑/ם אַיְסִרֵ֕/ם כְּ/שֵׁ֖מַע לַ/עֲדָתָֽ/ם
7:13 Vae eis, quoniam recesserunt a me ! vastabuntur, quia praevaricati sunt in me, et ego redemi eos, et ipsi locuti sunt contra me mendacia.
*H Woe to them, for they have departed from me: they shall be wasted because they have transgressed against me: and I redeemed them: and they have spoken lies against me.


Ver. 13. Lies, attributing their deliverance to the golden calf, (3 K. xii. 28. C. Ex. xxxii. 8. M.) and always denying my justice or power.

Οὐαὶ αὐτοῖς, ὅτι ἀπεπήδησαν ἀπʼ ἐμοῦ· δείλαιοί εἰσιν, ὅτι ἠσέβησαν εἰς ἐμέ· ἐγὼ δὲ ἐλυτρωσάμην αὐτοὺς, αὐτοὶ δὲ κατελάλησαν κατʼ ἐμοῦ ψευδῆ.
א֤וֹי לָ/הֶם֙ כִּֽי נָדְד֣וּ מִמֶּ֔/נִּי שֹׁ֥ד לָ/הֶ֖ם כִּֽי פָ֣שְׁעוּ בִ֑/י וְ/אָנֹכִ֣י אֶפְדֵּ֔/ם וְ/הֵ֕מָּה דִּבְּר֥וּ עָלַ֖/י כְּזָבִֽים
7:14 Et non clamaverunt ad me in corde suo, sed ululabant in cubilibus suis : super triticum et vinum ruminabant ; recesserunt a me.
*H And they have not cried to me with their heart, but they howled in their beds: they have thought upon wheat and wine, they are departed from me.


Ver. 14. Thought: "ruminated." H. — Heb. "assembled, or been afraid." Sept. "they were cut," (C.) in honour of idols, hoping to avert the famine. S. Cyr.

Καὶ οὐκ ἐβόησαν πρὸς μὲ αἱ καρδίαι αὐτῶν, ἀλλʼ ἢ ὠλόλυζον ἐν ταῖς κοίταις αὐτῶν· ἐπὶ σίτῳ καὶ οἴνῳ κατετέμνοντο.
וְ/לֹֽא זָעֲק֤וּ אֵלַ/י֙ בְּ/לִבָּ֔/ם כִּ֥י יְיֵלִ֖ילוּ עַל מִשְׁכְּבוֹתָ֑/ם עַל דָּגָ֧ן וְ/תִיר֛וֹשׁ יִתְגּוֹרָ֖רוּ יָס֥וּרוּ בִֽ/י
7:15 Et ego erudivi eos, et confortavi brachia eorum, et in me cogitaverunt malitiam.
*H And I have chastised them, and strengthened their arms: and they have imagined evil against me.


Ver. 15. Arms. I gave them my laws and power to resist the enemy. M.

Ἐπαιδεύθησαν ἐν ἐμοὶ, κᾀγὼ κατίσχυσα τοὺς βραχίονας αὐτῶν, καὶ εἰς ἐμὲ ἐλογίσαντο πονηρά.
וַ/אֲנִ֣י יִסַּ֔רְתִּי חִזַּ֖קְתִּי זְרֽוֹעֹתָ֑/ם וְ/אֵלַ֖/י יְחַשְּׁבוּ רָֽע
7:16 Reversi sunt ut essent absque jugo ; facti sunt quasi arcus dolosus : cadent in gladio principes eorum, a furore linguae suae. Ista subsannatio eorum in terra Aegypti.]
*H They returned, that they might be without yoke: they became like a deceitful bow: their princes shall fall by the sword, for the rage of their tongue. This is their derision in the land of Egypt.


Ver. 16. Returned, imitating Apis, the folly of Egypt. They have repeatedly followed idols in Egypt, and in the desert, under Jeroboam, Achab, Jehu, &c. — Deceitful. Sept. "bent." Theodoret reads, "unbent." It never hits the mark, (C.) but wounds the person who uses it. S. Jer. — Derision. The Egyptians laugh at them; (C.) or thus they acted heretofore, in Egypt. Chal.

Ἀπεστράφησαν εἰς οὐδὲν, ἐγένοντο ὡς τόξον ἐντεταμένον· πεσοῦνται ἐν ῥομφαίᾳ οἱ ἄρχοντες αὐτῶν διʼ ἀπαιδευσίαν γλώσσης αὐτῶν· οὗτος ὁ φαυλισμὸς αὐτῶν ἐν γῇ Αἰγύπτῳ.
