10:1 Et anno centesimo sexagesimo, ascendit Alexander Antiochi filius, qui cognominatus est Nobilis, et occupavit Ptolemaidam : et receperunt eum, et regnavit illic.

*H Now in the hundred and sixtieth year, Alexander, the son of Antiochus, surnamed the Illustrious, came up and took Ptolemais, and they received him, and he reigned there.


Ver. 1. Illustrious. He falsely asserted that he was the son of Epiphanes, being of very mean birth. Just. xxxv. W. — Others say that he was illegitimate, and styled Ballas after his mother Bala, though the name in Syr. may denote "a worthless person." In his medals he styles himself Deopator Eúergetes, as if "God were his father," and himself "beneficent." C. Usher, A. 3851. — At any rate the Romans and Egyptians acknowledged him, being glad to find a rival for Demetrius, who was become odious likewise to the Jews and Syrians. Heraclides had been deprived of his government (C.) by the king, (C. vii. 8.) and in revenge (H.) took Alexander, and Laodicea, daughter of Epiphanes, to Rome, where he gained over many of the senators, who agreed to help them to recover the kingdom. Heraclides then levied forces at Ephesus, and Ptolemais was delivered up to Alexander, whence he wrote to Jonathan. Nothing contributed more than these divisions to secure the liberty of the Jews.

Καὶ ἐν ἔτει ἑξηκοστῷ καὶ ἑκατοστῷ ἀνέβη Ἀλέξανδρος ὁ τοῦ Ἀντιόχου ὁ Ἐπιφανής, καὶ κατελάβετο Πτολεμαΐδα, καὶ ἐπεδέξαντο αὐτὸν, καὶ ἐβασίλευσεν ἐκεῖ.
10:2 Et audivit Demetrius rex, et congregavit exercitum copiosum valde, et exivit obviam illi in praelium.
And king Demetrius heard of it, and gathered together an exceeding great army, and went forth against him to fight.
Καὶ ἤκουσε Δημήτριος ὁ βασιλεύς, καὶ συνήγαγε δυνάμεις πολλὰς σφόδρα, καὶ ἐξῆλθεν εἰς συνάντησιν αὐτῷ εἰς πόλεμον.
10:3 Et misit Demetrius epistolam ad Jonathan verbis pacificis, ut magnificaret eum.
*H And Demetrius sent a letter to Jonathan, with peaceable words, to magnify him.


Ver. 3. Magnify, "extol," or grant him fresh dignities. Soter wished to gain over Janathas, to prevent his rival from receiving supplies from Egypt. C.

Καὶ ἀπέστειλε Δημήτριος πρὸς Ἰωνάθαν ἐπιστολὰς λόγοις εἰρηνικοῖς ὥστε μεγαλῦναι αὐτόν.
10:4 Dixit enim : Anticipemus facere pacem cum eo, priusquam faciat cum Alexandro adversum nos :
For he said: Let us first make a peace with him, before he make one with Alexander against us.
Εἶπε γάρ, προφθάσωμεν τοῦ εἰρήνην θεῖναι μετʼ αὐτοῦ, πρινὴ θεῖναι αὐτὸν μετὰ Ἀλεξάνδρου καθʼ ἡμῶν.
10:5 recordabitur enim omnium malorum, quae fecimus in eum, et in fratrem ejus, et in gentem ejus.
For he will remember all the evils that we have done against him, and against his brother, and against his nation.
Μνησθήσεται γὰρ πάντων τῶν κακῶν ὧν συνετελέσαμεν πρὸς αὐτόν, καὶ εἰς τοὺς ἀδελφοὺς αὐτοῦ, καὶ εἰς τὸ ἔθνος αὐτοῦ.
10:6 Et dedit ei potestatem congregandi exercitum, et fabricare arma, et esse ipsum socium ejus : et obsides, qui erant in arce, jussit tradi ei.
And he gave him authority to gather together a army, and to make arms, and that he should be his confederate: and the hostages that were in the castle, he commanded to be delivered to him.
Καὶ ἔδωκεν αὐτῷ ἐξουσίαν συναγαγεῖν δυνάμεις, καὶ κατασκευάζειν ὅπλα, καὶ εἶναι αὐτὸν σύμμαχον αὐτοῦ, καὶ τὰ ὅμηρα τὰ ἐν τῇ ἄκρᾳ εἶπε παραδοῦναι αὐτῷ.
10:7 Et venit Jonathas in Jerusalem, et legit epistolas in auditu omnis populi, et eorum qui in arce erant.
And Jonathan came to Jerusalem, and read the letters in the hearing of all the people, and of them that were in the castle.
Καὶ ἦλθεν Ἰωνάθαν εἰς Ἱερουσαλὴμ, καὶ ἀνέγνω τὰς ἐπιστολὰς εἰς τὰ ὦτα παντὸς τοῦ λαοῦ, καὶ τῶν ἐκ τῆς ἄκρας.
10:8 Et timuerunt timore magno, quoniam audierunt quod dedit ei rex potestatem congregandi exercitum.
*H And they were struck with great fear, because they heard that the king had given him authority to gather together an army.


Ver. 8. Fear. The Syrians in the castle would fear, while the Jews would rejoice, and particularly the hostages. C. ix. 53. H.

Καὶ ἐφοβήθησα φόβον μέγαν ὅτε ἤκουσαν ὅτι ἔδωκεν αὐτῷ ὁ βασιλεὺς ἐξουσίαν συναγαγεῖν δυνάμεις.
10:9 Et traditi sunt Jonathae obsides, et reddidit eos parentibus suis :
And the hostages were delivered to Jonathan, and he restored them to their parents.
Καὶ παρέδωκαν οἱ ἐκ τῆς ἄκρας Ἰωνάθαν τὰ ὅμηρα, καὶ ἀπέδωκεν αὐτοὺς τοῖς γονεῦσιν αὐτῶν.
10:10 et habitavit Jonathas in Jerusalem, et coepit aedificare et innovare civitatem.
And Jonathan dwelt in Jerusalem, and began to build, and to repair the city.
Καὶ ᾤκησεν Ἰωνάθαν ἐν Ἱερουσαλήμ, καὶ ἤρξατο οἰκοδομεῖν καὶ καινίζειν τὴν πόλιν.
10:11 Et dixit facientibus opera ut exstruerent muros, et montem Sion in circuitu lapidibus quadratis ad munitionem : et ita fecerunt.
*H And he ordered workmen to build the walls, and mount Sion round about with square stones for fortification: and so they did.


Ver. 11. Did. The wall built by Judas had been demolished. C. iv. 60. and vi. 62.

Καὶ εἶπε πρὸς τοὺς ποιοῦντας τὰ ἔργα, οἰκοδομεῖν τὰ τείχη, καὶ τὸ ὄρος Σιὼν κυκλόθεν ἐκ λίθων τετραγώνων εἰς ὀχύρωσιν· καὶ ἐποίησαν οὕτως.
10:12 Et fugerunt alienigenae, qui erant in munitionibus quas Bacchides aedificaverat :
Then the strangers that were in the strong holds, which Bacchides had built, fled away.
Καὶ ἔφυγον οἱ ἀλλογενεῖς οἱ ὄντες ἐν τοῖς ὀχυρώμασιν οἷς ᾠκοδόμησε Βακχίδης.
10:13 et reliquit unusquisque locum suum, et abiit in terram suam :
And every man left his place, and departed into his own country:
Καὶ κατέλιπεν ἕκαστος τὸν τόπον αὐτοῦ, καὶ ἀπῆλθεν εἰς τὴν γῆν αὐτοῦ.
10:14 tantum in Bethsura remanserunt aliqui ex his qui reliquerant legem et praecepta Dei : erat enim haec eis ad refugium.
Only in Bethsura there remained some of them, that had forsaken the law, and the commandments of God: for this was a place of refuge for them.
Πλὴν ἐν Βαιθσούρᾳ ὑπελείφθησάν τινες τῶν καταλιπόντων τὸν νόμον καὶ τὰ προστάγματα, ἦν γὰρ αὐτοῖς φυγαδευτήριον.
10:15 Et audivit Alexander rex promissa, quae promisit Demetrius Jonathae : et narraverunt ei praelia, et virtutes quas ipse fecit, et fratres ejus, et labores quos laboraverunt :
And king Alexander heard of the promises that Demetrius had made Jonathan: and they told him of the battles, and the worthy acts that he and his brethren had done, and the labours that they had endured.
Καὶ ἤκουσεν Ἀλέξανδρος ὁ βασιλεὺς τὰς ἐπαγγελίας ὅσας ἀπέστειλε Δημήτριος τῷ Ἰωνάθαν, καὶ διηγήσαντο αὐτῷ τοὺς πολέμους καὶ τὰς ἀνδραγαθίας ἃς ἐποίησεν αὐτὸς καὶ οἱ ἀδελφοὶ αὐτοῦ, καὶ τοὺς κόπους οὓς ἔσχον,
10:16 et ait : Numquid inveniemus aliquem virum talem ? et nunc faciemus eum amicum, et socium nostrum.
And he said: Shall we find such another man? now, therefore, we will make him our friend and our confederate.
καὶ εἶπε, μὴ εὑρήσομεν ἄνδρα τοιοῦτον ἕνα; καὶ νῦν ποιήσομεν αὐτὸν φίλον, καὶ σύμμαχον ἡμῶν.
10:17 Et scripsit epistolam, et misit ei secundum haec verba, dicens :
So he wrote a letter, and sent it to him according to these words, saying:
Καὶ ἔγραψεν ἐπιστολὰς, καὶ ἀπέστειλεν αὐτῷ κατὰ τοὺς λόγους τούτους, λέγων,
10:18 Rex Alexander fratri Jonathae salutem.

10:19 Audivimus de te quod vir potens sis viribus, et aptus es ut sis amicus noster :
We have heard of thee, that thou art a man of great power, and fit to be our friend:
Ἀκηκόαμεν περὶ σοῦ, ὅτι ἀνὴρ δυνατὸς ἰσχύϊ, καὶ ἐπιτήδειος εἶ τοῦ εἶναι ἡμῖν φίλος.
10:20 et nunc constituimus te hodie summum sacerdotem gentis tuae, et ut amicus voceris regis (et misit ei purpuram, et coronam auream) et quae nostra sunt sentias nobiscum, et conserves amicitias ad nos.
*H Now therefore, we make thee this day high priest of thy nation, and that thou be called the king's friend, (and he sent him a purple robe, and a crown of gold) and that thou be of one mind with us in our affairs, and keep friendship with us.


Ver. 20. Make. The king could not make him high priest, as he was that already: but he acknowledges the title. W. — Crown: both the badges of kings, or granted by them. v. 62. Dan. v. 29.

Καὶ νῦν καθεστάκαμέν σε σήμερον ἀρχιερέα τοῦ ἔθνους σου, καὶ φίλον βασιλέως καλεῖσθαι· καὶ ἀπέστειλεν αὐτῷ πορφύραν καὶ στέφανον χρυσοῦν· καὶ φρονεῖν τὰ ἡμῶν, καὶ συντηρεῖν φιλίαν πρὸς ἡμᾶς.
10:21 Et induit se Jonathas stola sancta septimo mense, anno centesimo sexagesimo, in die solemni scenopegiae : et congregavit exercitum, et fecit arma copiosa.
*H Then Jonathan put on the holy vestment in the seventh month, in the year one hundred and threescore, at the feast day of the tabernacles: and he gathered together an army, and made a great number of arms.


Ver. 21. Vestment, at the feast of tabernacles, A. 3852, seven years after the death of Alcimus, and nine since Judas fell. It is not clear from Josephus, (xiii. 5. and xx. 7.) whether the people chose him high priest, or they rather pressed him to accept the king's offer. C.

Καὶ ἐνεδύσατο Ἰωνάθαν τὴν ἁγίαν στολὴν τῷ ἑβδόμῳ μηνὶ ἔτους ἑξηκοστοῦ καὶ ἑκατοστοῦ ἐν ἑορτῇ σκηνοπηγίας, καὶ συνήγαγε δυνάμεις, καὶ κατεσκεύασεν ὅπλα πολλά.
10:22 Et audivit Demetrius verba ista, et contristatus est nimis, et ait :
And Demetrius heard these words, and was exceeding sorry, and said:
Καὶ ἤκουσε Δημήτριος τοὺς λόγους τούτους. καὶ ἐλυπήθη, καὶ εἶπε,
10:23 Quid hoc fecimus, quod praeoccupavit nos Alexander apprehendere amicitiam Judaeorum ad munimen sui ?
*H What is this that we have done, that Alexander hath prevented us to gain the friendship of the Jews to strengthen himself?


Ver. 23. Prevented, by sending presents. Demetrius had sent a letter and liberated the hostages, whom Jonathas might justly receive without declaring for the king. M.

τί τοῦτο ἐποιήσαμεν, ὅτι προέφθακεν ἡμᾶς ὁ Ἀλέξανδρος τοῦ φιλίαν καταθέσθαι τοῖς Ἰουδαίοις εἰς στήριγμα;
10:24 scribam et ego illis verba deprecatoria, et dignitates, et dona, ut sint mecum in adjutorium.
I also will write to them words of request, and offer dignities, and gifts: that they may be with me to aid me.
Γράψω αὐτοῖς κᾀγὼ λόγους παρακλήσεως, καὶ ὕψους, καὶ δομάτων, ὅπως ὦσι σὺν ἐμοὶ εἰς βοήθειαν.
10:25 Et scripsit eis in haec verba : Rex Demetrius genti Judaeorum salutem.
*H And he wrote to them in these words: King Demetrius to the nation of the Jews, greeting.


Ver. 25. Jews. He perhaps wished to set them at variance with Jonathan, to whom alone Alexander had addressed his letter. H.

Καὶ ἀπέστειλεν αὐτοῖς κατὰ τοὺς λόγους τούτους· βασιλεὺς Δημήτριος τῷ ἔθνει τῶν Ἰουδαίων χαίρειν.
10:26 Quoniam servastis ad nos pactum, et mansistis in amicitia nostra, et non accessistis ad inimicos nostros, audivimus, et gavisi sumus.
*H Whereas you have kept covenant with us, and have continued in our friendship, and have not joined with our enemies, we have heard of it, and are glad.


Ver. 26. Heard. He scruples not to tell a lie, for he had been informed of the contrary. v. 22. W. — "He prudently chose rather to appear to find them innocent, than to make them so," (Grot.) by granting them pardon.

Ἐπεὶ συνετηρήσατε τὰς πρὸς ἡμᾶς συνθήκας, καὶ ἐνεμείνατε τῇ φιλίᾳ ἡμῶν, καὶ οὐ προσεχωρήσατε τοῖς ἐχθροῖς ἡμῶν, ἠκούσαμεν, καὶ ἐχάρημεν.
10:27 Et nunc perseverate adhuc conservare ad nos fidem, et retribuemus vobis bona pro his quae fecistis nobiscum :
Wherefore now continue still to keep fidelity towards us, and we will reward you with good things, for what you have done in our behalf.
Καὶ νῦν ἐμμείνατε ἔτι τοῦ συντηρῆσαι πρὸς ἡμᾶς πίστιν, καὶ ἀνταποδώσομεν ὑμῖν ἀγαθὰ, ἀνθʼ ὧν ποιεῖτε μεθʼ ἡμῶν.
10:28 et remittemus vobis praestationes multas, et dabimus vobis donationes.
And we will remit to you many charges, and will give you gifts.
Καὶ ἀφήσομεν ὑμῖν ἀφέματα πολλὰ, καὶ δώσομεν ὑμῖν δόματα.
10:29 Et nunc absolvo vos et omnes Judaeos a tributis, et pretia salis indulgeo, et coronas remitto, et tertias seminis :
*H And now I free you, and all the Jews, from tributes, and I release you from the customs of salt, and remit the crowns, and the thirds of the seed:


Ver. 29. Salt, of which there were pits in the country. C. xi. 35. — Crowns. Antiochus the great had before granted this exemption to the ministers of the temple. Jos. Ant. xii. 3. C. — The Jews, after its ruin, used to present such to their patriarchs. But the Roman emperors claimed them. Grot.

Καὶ νῦν ἀπολύω ὑμᾶς, καὶ ἀφίημι πάντας τοὺς Ἰουδαίους ἀπὸ τῶν φόρων, καὶ τῆς τιμῆς τοῦ ἁλὸς, καὶ ἀπὸ τῶν στεφάνων,
10:30 et dimidiam partem fructus ligni, quod est portionis meae, relinquo vobis ex hodierno die, et deinceps, ne accipiatur a terra Juda, et a tribus civitatibus quae additae sunt illi ex Samaria et Galilaea ; ex hodierna die et in totum tempus :
*H And the half of the fruit of trees, which is my share, I leave to you from this day forward, so that it shall not be taken of the land of Juda, and of the three cities that are added thereto out of Samaria and Galilee, from this day forth, and for ever:


Ver. 30. Cities, or cantons. Gr. "nomes," specified C. xi. 34.

καὶ ἀντὶ τοῦ τρίτου τῆς σπορᾶς, καὶ ἀντὶ τοῦ ἡμίσους τοῦ καρποῦ τοῦ ξυλίνου τοῦ ἐπιβάλλοντός μοι λαβεῖν ἀφίημι ἀπὸ τῆς σήμερον καὶ ἐπέκεινα τοῦ λαβεῖν ἀπὸ τῆς γῆς Ἰούδα, καὶ ἀπὸ τῶν τριῶν νομῶν τῶν προστιθεμένων αὐτῇ ἀπὸ τῆς Σαμαρείτιδος καὶ Γαλιλαίας, καὶ ἀπὸ τῆς σήμερον ἡμέρας καὶ εἰς τὸν αἰῶνα χρόνον.
10:31 et Jerusalem sit sancta, et libera cum finibus suis : et decimae et tributa ipsius sint.
*H And let Jerusalem be holy and free, with the borders thereof: and let the tenths, and tributes be for itself.


Ver. 31. Free; "an asylum" (Jos.) without any foreign troops, like Delphi. Grot. — Tyre was also "a sacred asylum." Vaillant, A. 174.

Καὶ Ἱερουσαλὴμ ἤτω ἁγία καὶ ἀφειμένη, καὶ τὰ ὅρια αὐτῆς, αἱ δεκάται καὶ τὰ τέλη.
10:32 Remitto etiam potestatem arcis, quae est in Jerusalem : et do eam summo sacerdoti, ut constituat in ea viros quoscumque ipse elegerit, qui custodiant eam.
*H I yield up also the power of the castle that is in Jerusalem, and I give it to the high priest, to place therein such men as he shall choose, to keep it.


Ver. 32. Castle. Yet Jonathas was afterwards forced to besiege it. C.

Ἀφίημι καὶ τὴν ἐξουσίαν τῆς ἄκρας τῆς ἐν Ἱερουσαλὴμ, καὶ δίδωμι τῷ ἀρχιερεῖ, ὅπως ἂν καταστήσῃ ἐν αὐτῇ ἄνδρας οὓς ἂν ἐκλέξηται αὐτὸς τοῦ φυλάσσειν αὐτήν.
10:33 Et omnem animam Judaeorum, quae captiva est a terra Juda in omni regno meo, relinquo liberam gratis, ut omnes a tributis solvantur, etiam pecorum suorum.
*H And every soul of the Jews that hath been carried captive from the land of Juda in all my kingdom, I set at liberty freely, that all be discharged from tributes, even of their cattle.


Ver. 33. Cattle, so that they shall not be forced to work for the public. Jos.

Καὶ πᾶσαν φυχὴν Ἰουδαίων τὴν αἰχμαλωτισθεῖσαν ἀπὸ γῆς Ἰούδα εἰς πᾶσαν βασιλείαν μου ἀφίημι ἐλευθέραν δωρέαν· καὶ πάντες ἀφιέτωσαν τοὺς φόρους καὶ τῶν κτηνῶν αὐτῶν.
10:34 Et omnes dies solemnes, et sabbata, et neomeniae, et dies decreti, et tres dies ante diem solemnem, et tres dies post diem solemnem, sint omnes immunitatis et remissionis omnibus Judaeis, qui sunt in regno meo :
*H And I will that all the feasts, and the sabbaths, and the new moons, and the days appointed, and three days before the solemn day, and three days after the solemn day, be all days of immunity and freedom, for all the Jews that are in my kingdom:


Ver. 34. Appointed "of lots," Judith, the dedication, &c. These days were privileged, that the people might go to the temple without being molested, and carry what they would free of all taxes.

Καὶ πᾶσαι αἱ ἑορταὶ καὶ τὰ σάββατα καὶ νουμηνίαι, καὶ ἡμέραι ἀποδεδειγμέναι, καὶ τρεῖς ἡμέραι πρὸ ἑορτῆς καὶ τρεῖς ἡμέραι μετὰ ἑορτὴν, ἔστωσαν πᾶσαι αἱ ἡμέραι ἀτελείας καὶ ἀφέσεως πᾶσι τοῖς Ἰουδαίοις τοῖς οὖσιν ἐν τῇ βασιλείᾳ μου.
10:35 et nemo habebit potestatem agere aliquid, et movere negotia adversus aliquem illorum in omni causa.
And no man shall have power to do any thing against them, or to molest any of them, in any cause.
Καὶ οὐχ ἕξει ἐξουσίαν οὐδεὶς πράσσειν καὶ παρενοχλεῖν τινα αὐτῶν περὶ παντὸς πράγματος.
10:36 Et ascribantur ex Judaeis in exercitu regis ad triginta millia virorum : et dabuntur illis copiae ut oportet omnibus exercitibus regis, et ex eis ordinabuntur qui sint in munitionibus regis magni :
*H And let there be enrolled in the king's army to the number of thirty thousand of the Jews: and allowance shall be made them, as is due to all the king's forces and certain of them shall be appointed to be in the fortresses of the great king:


Ver. 36. Let. This is not required, but a proof of confidence. C. — Great king. He assumes the titles of the Persian monarchs. H.

Καὶ προγραφήτωσαν τῶν Ἰουδαίων εἰς τὰς δυνάμεις τοῦ βασιλέως εἰς τριάκοντα χιλιάδας ἀνδρῶν, καὶ δοθήσεται αὐτοῖς ξένια ὡς καθήκει πάσαις ταῖς δυνάμεσι τοῦ βασιλέως.
10:37 et ex his constituentur super negotia regni, quae aguntur ex fide, et principes sint ex eis, et ambulent in legibus suis, sicut praecepit rex in terra Juda.
*H And some of them shall be set over the affairs of the kingdom, that are of trust, and let the governors be taken from among themselves, and let them walk in their own laws, as the king hath commanded in the land of Juda.


Ver. 37. Trust, to guard the king, (Jos.) or be in the treasury. T. — Laws. He revokes the impious edicts of Epiphanes.

Καὶ κατασταθήσεται ἐξ αὐτῶν ἐν τοῖς ὀχυρώμασι τοῦ βασιλέως τοῖς μεγάλοις, καὶ ἐκ τούτων κατασταθήσεται ἐπὶ χρειῶν τῆς βασιλείας τῶν οὐσῶν εἰς πίστιν· καὶ οἱ ἐπʼ αὐτῶν καὶ οἱ ἄρχοντες ἔστωσαν ἐξ αὐτῶν· καὶ πορευέσθωσαν τοῖς νόμοις αὐτῶν, καθὰ καὶ προσέταξεν ὁ βασιλεὺς ἐν γῇ Ἰούδα.
10:38 Et tres civitates, quae additae sunt Judaeae ex regione Samariae, cum Judaea reputentur : ut sint sub uno, et non obediant alii potestati, nisi summi sacerdotis.
And the three cities that are added to Judea, out of the country of Samaria, let them be accounted with Judea: that they may be under one, and obey no other authority but that of the high priest:
Καὶ τοὺς τρεῖς νομοὺς τοὺς προστεθέντας τῇ Ἰουδαίᾳ ἀπὸ τῆς χώρας Σαμαρείας, προστεθήτω τῇ Ἰουδαίᾳ πρὸς τὸ λογισθῆναι τοῦ γενέσθαι ὑφʼ ἕνα, τοῦ μὴ ὑπακοῦσαι ἄλλης ἐξουσίας ἀλλʼ ἢ τοῦ ἀρχιερέως.

Ver. 39. Ptolemais. This was not a great present, as it was in the hands of his rival. But he wished the Jews to retake it.

10:43 Et quicumque confugerint in templum quod est Jerosolymis, et in omnibus finibus ejus, obnoxii regi in omni negotio dimittantur, et universa quae sunt eis in regno meo, libera habeant.
*H And whosoever shall flee into the temple that is in Jerusalem, and in all the borders thereof, being indebted to the king for any matter, let them be set at liberty, and all that they have in my kingdom, let them have it free.

For the building also, or repairing the works of the holy places, the charges shall be given out of the king's revenues:

10:45 et ad exstruendos muros Jerusalem, et communiendos in circuitu, sumptus dabuntur de ratione regis, et ad construendos muros in Judaea.
For the building also of the walls of Jerusalem, and the fortifying thereof round about, the charges shall be given out of the king's account, as also for the building of the walls in Judea.
Καὶ τοῦ οἰκοδομηθῆναι τὰ τείχη Ἱερουσαλὴμ καὶ ὀχυρῶσαι κυκλόθεν, καὶ ἡ δαπάνη δοθήσεται ἐκ τοῦ λόγου τοῦ βασιλέως, καὶ τοῦ οἰκοδομηθῆναι τὰ τείχη τὰ ἐν τῇ Ἰουδαίᾳ.
10:46 Ut audivit autem Jonathas et populus sermones istos, non crediderunt eis, nec receperunt eos : quia recordati sunt malitiae magnae, quam fecerat in Israel, et tribulaverat eos valde.
*H Now when Jonathan and the people heard these words, they gave no credit to them, nor received them because they remembered the great evil that he had done in Israel, for he had afflicted them exceedingly.


Ver. 46. No credit. Thus would all prudent people judge. W. — Alexander had moreover made the first offers, and was supported by the Romans. The Jews had not to examine his title, which was admitted by many in Syria.

Ὡς δὲ ἤκουσεν Ἰωνάθαν καὶ ὁ λαὸς τοὺς λόγους τούτους, οὐκ ἐπίστευσαν αὐτοῖς οὐδὲ ἐπεδέξαντο, ὅτι ἐπεμνήσθησαν τῆς κακίας τῆς μεγάλης ἧς ἐποίησεν ἐν Ἰσραὴλ, καὶ ἔθλιψεν αὐτοὺς σφόδρα.
10:47 Et complacuit eis in Alexandrum, quia ipse fuerat eis princeps sermonum pacis, et ipsi auxilium ferebant omnibus diebus.
And their inclinations were towards Alexander, because he had been the chief promoter of peace in their regard, and him they always helped.
Καὶ εὐδόκησαν ἐν Ἀλεξάνδρῳ, ὅτι αὐτὸς ἐγένετο αὐτοῖς ἀρχηγὸς λόγων εἰρηνικῶν, καὶ συνεμάχουν αὐτῷ πάσας τὰς ἡμέρας.

But the right, where Demetrius fought in person, was forced to yield; and the king plunging with horse into a bog, was pierced with arrows, fighting bravely. He had reigned twelve years, and fell a victim to the surrounding kings, whom he had not conciliated. Jos. Just. xxxv. &c.

And king Ptolomee answered, saying: Happy is the day wherein thou didst return to the land of thy fathers, and sattest in the throne of their kingdom.

And now I will do to thee as thou hast written but meet me at Ptolemais, that we may see one another, and I may give her to thee as thou hast said.

And he went honourably to Ptolemais, and he met there the two kings, and he gave them much silver, and gold, and presents: and he found favour in their sight.

Now, therefore, if thou trustest in thy forces, come down to us into the plain, and there let us try one another: for with me is the strength of war.
Νῦν οὖν εἰ πέποιθας ἐπὶ ταῖς δυνάμεσί σου, κατάβηθι πρὸς ἡμᾶς εἰς τὸ πεδίον, καὶ συγκριθῶμεν ἑαυτοῖς ἐκεῖ, ὅτι μετʼ ἐμοῦ ἐστι δύναμις τῶν πόλεων.

10:74 Ut audivit autem Jonathas sermones Apollonii, motus est animo : et elegit decem millia virorum, et exiit ab Jerusalem, et occurrit ei Simon frater ejus in adjutorium :
Now when Jonathan heard the words of Apollonius, he was moved in his mind: and he chose ten thousand men, and went out of Jerusalem, and Simon, his brother, met him to help him.

And they that were in the city being affrighted, opened the gates to him: so Jonathan took Joppe.

Καὶ ἤκουσεν Ἀπολλώνιος, καὶ παρενέβαλε τρισχιλίαν ἵππον, καὶ δύναμιν πολλήν· καὶ ἐπορεύθη εἰς Ἄζωτον ὡς διοδεύων, καὶ ἅμα προῆγεν εἰς τὸ πεδίον, διὰ τὸ ἔχειν αὐτὸν πλῆθος ἵππου καὶ πεποιθέναι ἐπʼ αὐτῇ.
10:78 Et abiit Azotum tamquam iter faciens, et statim exiit in campum, eo quod haberet multitudinem equitum, et confideret in eis. Et insecutus est eum Jonathas in Azotum, et commiserunt praelium.
And he went to Azotus, as one that was making a journey, and immediately he went forth into the plain: because he had a great number of horsemen, and he trusted in them. And Jonathan followed after him to Azotus, and they joined battle.
Καὶ κατεδίωξεν Ἰωνάθαν ὀπίσω αὐτοῦ εἰς Ἄζωτον, καὶ συνῆψαν αἱ παρεμβολαὶ εἰς πόλεμον.
10:79 Et reliquit Apollonius in castris mille equites post eos occulte.
And Apollonius left privately in the camp a thousand horsemen behind them.
Καὶ ἀπέλιπεν Ἀπολλώνιος χιλίαν ἵππον ἐν κρυπτῷ κατόπισθεν αὐτῶν.
10:80 Et cognovit Jonathas quoniam insidiae sunt post se, et circuierunt castra ejus, et jecerunt jacula in populum a mane usque ad vesperam.
*H And Jonathan knew that there was an ambush behind him, and they surrounded his army, and cast darts at the people from morning till evening.


Ver. 80. Army. Lit. "camp," which the Vulg. puts for an army chiefly of foot. Josephus intimates that Jonathas drew up his forces in the shape "of a tile," or phalanx, and ordered them to face about on every side. C. — Thus the enemy could only throw darts, but could not penetrate. W.

Καὶ ἔγνω Ἰωνάθαν ὅτι ἐστὶν ἔνεδρον κατόπισθεν αὐτοῦ, καὶ ἐκύκλωσαν αὐτοῦ τὴν παρεμβολὴν, καὶ ἐξετίναξαν τὰς σχίζας εἰς τὸν λαὸν ἐκ πρωΐθεν ἕως ἑσπέρας.
10:81 Populus autem stabat, sicut praeceperat Jonathas : et laboraverunt equi eorum.
*H But the people stood still, as Jonathan had commanded them: and so their horses were fatigued.


Ver. 81. Fatigued. In the evening, Simon seeing the enemy's cavalry tired, fell upon the infantry.

Ὁ δὲ λαὸς εἱστήκει, καθὼς ἐπέταξεν Ἰωνάθαν, καὶ ἐκοπίασαν οἱ ἵπποι αὐτῶν.
10:82 Et ejecit Simon exercitum suum, et commisit contra legionem : equites enim fatigati erant : et contriti sunt ab eo, et fugerunt.
Then Simon drew forth his army, and attacked the legion: for the horsemen were wearied: and they were discomfited by him, and fled.
Καὶ εἵλκυσε Σίμων τὴν δύναμιν αὐτοῦ, καὶ συνῆψε πρὸς τὴν φάραγγα· ἡ γὰρ ἵππος ἐξελύθη· καὶ συνετρίβησαν ὑπʼ αὐτοῦ, καὶ ἔφυγον.
10:83 Et qui dispersi sunt per campum, fugerunt in Azotum, et intraverunt in Bethdagon idolum suum, ut ibi se liberarent.
*H And they that were scattered about the plain fled into Azotus, and went into Bethdagon, their idol's temple, there to save themselves.


Ver. 83. And. Et qui seems to be mistaken for equi, "the horsemen," as the Gr. Syr. and Jos. read. — Bethdagon, "the house of Dagon." — Temple. This is the sense of the Greek. C. — Vulg. has lit. "their idols." See Judg. xvi. 23. H.

Καὶ ἡ ἵππος ἐσκορπίσθη ἐν τῷ πεδίῳ, καὶ ἔφυγον εἰς Ἄζωτον, καὶ εἰσῆλθον εἰς Βηθδαγὼν τὸ εἰδωλεῖον αὐτῶν, τοῦ σωθῆναι
10:84 Et succendit Jonathas Azotum, et civitates quae erant in circuitu ejus, et accepit spolia eorum, et templum Dagon : et omnes qui fugerunt in illud, succendit igni.
But Jonathan set fire to Azotus, and the cities that were round about it, and took the spoils of them and the temple of Dagon: and all them that were fled into it, he burnt with fire.
Καὶ ἐνεπύρισεν Ἰωνάθαν τὴν Ἄζωτον καὶ τὰς πόλεις τὰς κύκλῳ αὐτῆς, καὶ ἔλαβε τὰ σκῦλα αὐτῶν, καὶ τὸ ἱερὸν Δαγὼν καὶ τοὺς συμφυγόντας εἰς αὐτὸ ἐνεπύρισε πυρί.
10:85 Et fuerunt qui ceciderunt gladio, cum his qui succensi sunt, fere octo millia virorum.
So they that were slain by the sword, with them that were burnt, were almost eight thousand men.
Καὶ ἐγένοντο οἱ πεπτωκότες μαχαίρᾳ σὺν τοῖς ἐμπυρισθεῖσιν εἰς ἄνδρας ὀκτακισχιλίους.
10:86 Et movit inde Jonathas castra, et applicuit ea Ascalonem : et exierunt de civitate obviam illi in magna gloria.
And Jonathan, removed his army from thence and camped against Ascalon: and they went out of the city to meet him with great honour.
Καὶ ἀπῇρεν ἐκεῖθεν Ἰωνάθαν, καὶ παρενέβαλεν ἐπὶ Ἀσκάλωνα, καὶ ἐξῆλθον οἱ ἐκ τῆς πόλεως εἰς συνάντησιν αὐτῷ ἐν δόξῃ μεγάλῃ.
10:87 Et reversus est Jonathas in Jerusalem cum suis, habentibus spolia multa.
And Jonathan returned into Jerusalem with his people, having many spoils.
Καὶ ἐπέστρεψεν Ἰωνάθαν εἰς Ἱερουσαλὴμ σὺν τοῖς παρʼ αὐτοῦ, ἔχοντες σκῦλα πολλά.
10:88 Et factum est, ut audivit Alexander rex sermones istos, addidit adhuc glorificare Jonathan.
And it came to pass, when Alexander, the king heard these words, that he honoured Jonathan yet more.
Καὶ ἐγένετο ὡς ἤκουσεν Ἀλέξανδρος ὁ βασιλεὺς τοὺς λόγους τούτους, καὶ προσέθετο δοξάσαι τὸν Ἰωνάθαν.
10:89 Et misit ei fibulam auream, sicut consuetudo est dari cognatis regum. Et dedit ei Accaron, et omnes fines ejus, in possessionem.
*H And he sent him a buckle of gold, as the custom is, to be given to such as are of the royal blood. And he gave him Accaron, and all the borders thereof, in possession.

Καὶ ἀπέστειλεν αὐτῷ πόρπην χρυσῆν, ὡς ἔθος ἐστὶ δίδοσθαι τοῖς συγγενέσι τῶν βασιλέων· καὶ ἔδωκεν αὐτῷ τὴν Ἀκκαρὼν καὶ πάντα τὰ ὅρια αὐτῆς εἰς κληροδοσίαν.
