Ver. 1. Last days. This sometimes means after this. Is. ix. 1. But here it denotes the time which shall elapse from Christ till the day of eternity. The Jews allow that this prediction regards the Messias, though they will not explain it of Jesus Christ. Their exceptions are well refuted by Ribera. W. — It is plain that it can be verified nowhere else, but in the Church of Christ; though some expressions may, as usual, refer to the return of the captives. Isaias, (ii. 2.) &c. had already used the like terms under Ozias. Juda is here comforted, after its ruin had been denounced.

Καὶ ἔσται ἐπʼ ἐσχάτων τῶν ἡμερῶν ἐμφανὲς τὸ ὄρος Κυρίου, ἕτοιμον ἐπὶ τὰς κορυφὰς τῶν ὀρέων, καὶ μετεωρισθήσεται ὑπεράνω τῶν βουνῶν· καὶ σπεύσουσι πρὸς αὐτὸ λαοὶ,

4:2 et properabunt gentes multae, et dicent : Venite, ascendamus ad montem Domini, et ad domum Dei Jacob : et docebit nos de viis suis, et ibimus in semitis ejus, quia de Sion egredietur lex, et verbum Domini de Jerusalem.
*H And many nations shall come in haste, and say: Come, let us go up to the mountain of the Lord, and to the house of the God of Jacob: and he will teach us of his ways, and we will walk in his paths: for the law shall go forth out of Sion, and the word of the Lord out of Jerusalem.


Ver. 2. Jerusalem. No other nation ever embraced the Jewish law. But all received the gospel, (C.) which was first preached at Jerusalem, by people of that country. H. — "We are of yesterday, and we fill all your places." Tert.

καὶ πορεύσονται ἔθνη πολλὰ καὶ ἐροῦσι, δεῦτε, ἀναβῶμεν εἰς τὸ ὄρος Κυρίου, καὶ εἰς τὸν οἶκον τοῦ Θεοῦ Ἰακώβ· καὶ δείξουσιν ἡμῖν τὴν ὁδὸν αὐτοῦ, καὶ πορευσόμεθα ἐν ταῖς τρίβοις αὐτοῦ· ὅτι ἐκ Σιὼν ἐξελεύσεται νόμος, καὶ λόγος Κυρίου ἐξ Ἱερουσαλήμ.

4:3 Et judicabit inter populos multos, et corripiet gentes fortes usque in longinquum : et concident gladios suos in vomeres, et hastas suas in ligones : non sumet gens adversus gentem gladium, et non discent ultra belligerare.
*H And he shall judge among many people, and rebuke strong nations afar off: and they shall beat their swords into ploughshares, and their spears into spades: nation shall not take sword against nation: neither shall they learn war anymore.


Ver. 3. Judge, or "rule" (Judg. viii. 22.) as Christ does over all. C. — Plough-shares. Heb. "scythes," (H.) or "coulters." W. Mart. xiv. 34. C. — Learn, &c. The law of Christ is a law of peace; and all his true subjects, as much as lies in them, love and keep peace with all the world. Ch. — They will sustain injuries meekly. 1 Cor. vi. W. — When Christ appeared, the Roman empire enjoyed peace. C. — Aspera tum positis mitescent sæcula bellis, &c. Æn. i.

Καὶ κρινεῖ ἀναμέσον λαῶν πολλῶν, καὶ ἐξελέγξει ἔθνη ἰσχυρὰ ἕως εἰς μακράν· καὶ κατακόψουσι τὰς ῥομφαίας αὐτῶν εἰς ἄροτρα, καὶ τὰ δόρατα αὐτῶν εἰς δρέπανα, καὶ οὐκέτι μὴ ἀντάρῃ ἔθνος ἐπʼ ἔθνος ῥομφαίαν, καὶ οὐκέτι μὴ μάθωσι πολεμεῖν·

4:4 Et sedebit vir subtus vitem suam et subtus ficum suam, et non erit qui deterreat, quia os Domini exercituum locutum est.
*H And every man shall sit under his vine, and under his fig tree, and there shall be none to make them afraid, for the mouth of the Lord of hosts hath spoken.


Ver. 4. Fig-tree. Such a happiness would not suit the ambitious. Zac. iii. 10.

Καὶ ἀναπαύσεται ἕκαστος ὑποκάτω ἀμπέλου αὐτοῦ, καὶ ἕκαστος ὑποκάτω συκῆς αὐτοῦ, καὶ οὐκ ἔσται ὁ ἐκφοβῶν, διότι τὸ στόμα Κυρίου παντοκράτορος ἐλάλησε ταῦτα·
וְ/יָשְׁב֗וּ אִ֣ישׁ תַּ֧חַת גַּפְנ֛/וֹ וְ/תַ֥חַת תְּאֵנָת֖/וֹ וְ/אֵ֣ין מַחֲרִ֑יד כִּי פִ֛י יְהוָ֥ה צְבָא֖וֹת דִּבֵּֽר
4:5 Quia omnes populi ambulabunt unusquisque in nomine dei sui ; nos autem ambulabimus in nomine Domini Dei nostri, in aeternum et ultra.]
*H For all people will walk every one in the name of his god: but we will walk in the name of the Lord, our God, for ever and ever.


Ver. 5. And ever. After the captivity the Gentiles continued to worship idols, and the Jews had a greater aversion for them; but when the gospel was propagated, idols fell into contempt, and the Jewish law was at an end, while heretics were varying continually. The Church alone is stable, and built upon the rock. C. — All such quiet people as walk in the name of the Lord, will keep peace even with those who hate it, (Ps. cxix.) suffering persecution with joy. Heb. x. 34. S. Iræn. iv. 67. S. Cyr. &c. W.

Ὅτι πάντες οἱ λαοὶ πορεύσονται ἕκαστος τὴν ὁδὸν αὐτοῦ, ἡμεῖς δὲ πορευσόμεθα ἐν ὀνόματι Κυρίου Θεοῦ ἡμῶν εἰς τὸν αἰῶνα, καὶ ἐπέκεινα.

4:6 [In die illa, dicit Dominus, congregabo claudicantem, et eam quam ejeceram colligam, et quam afflixeram :
*H In that day, saith the Lord, I will gather up her that halteth: and her that I had cast out, I will gather up: and her whom I had afflicted.


Ver. 6. Halteth, as the synagogue did, (3 K. xviii. 21.) bringing nothing to perfection, (Heb. vii. 19.) while the Gentiles were abandoned to idolatry. From both Christ chose his Church. Acts xxi. 20. &c. C. — The Jews will be at last converted. W.

Ἐν τῇ ἡμέρᾳ ἐκείνῃ, λέγει Κύριος, συνάξω τὴν συντετριμμένην, καὶ τὴν ἐξωσμένην εἰσδέξομαι, καὶ οὓς ἀπωσάμην.

Ver. 7. Remnant, or numerous progeny. — Afflicted. Heb. and Sept. "repudiated," (C.) or "cast off." H.

Καὶ θήσομαι τὴν συντετριμμένην εἰς ὑπόλειμμα, καὶ τὴν ἀπωσμένην εἰς ἔθνος δυνατόν· καὶ βασιλεύσει Κύριος ἐπʼ αὐτοὺς ἐν ὄρει Σιὼν ἀπὸ τοῦ νῦν ἕως εἰς τὸν αἰῶνα.
וְ/שַׂמְתִּ֤י אֶת הַ/צֹּֽלֵעָה֙ לִ/שְׁאֵרִ֔ית וְ/הַ/נַּהֲלָאָ֖ה לְ/ג֣וֹי עָצ֑וּם וּ/מָלַ֨ךְ יְהוָ֤ה עֲלֵי/הֶם֙ בְּ/הַ֣ר צִיּ֔וֹן מֵ/עַתָּ֖ה וְ/עַד עוֹלָֽם
4:8 Et tu, turris gregis nebulosa filiae Sion, usque ad te veniet, et veniet potestas prima, regnum filiae Jerusalem.
*H And thou, O cloudy tower of the flock, of the daughter of Sion, unto thee shall it come: yea the first power shall come, the kingdom to the daughter of Jerusalem.


Ver. 8. Cloudy. Heb. "fortress, or ophel," a tower or wall near the temple. 2 Esd. iii. 27. — Flock. Jerusalem was no better, after the Chaldeans had destroyed it. 4 K. xvii. 9. Yet there Zorobabel, the Machabees, and Christ displayed their power. It was the cradle of the Church. Some take this to refer to Bethlehem, as C. v. 2. C. — Shall it come. Sept. add, "from Babylon." After the captivity the Jews shall flourish, as the Church shall prove victorious over all her persecutors. H.

Καὶ σὺ πύργος ποιμνίου αὐχμώδης, θυγάτηρ Σιὼν, ἐπὶ σὲ ἥξει, καὶ εἰσελεύσεται ἡ ἀρχὴ, ἡ πρώτη βασιλεία ἐκ Βαβυλῶνος τῇ θυγατρὶ Ἱερουσαλήμ.
וְ/אַתָּ֣ה מִגְדַּל עֵ֗דֶר עֹ֛פֶל בַּת צִיּ֖וֹן עָדֶ֣י/ךָ תֵּאתֶ֑ה וּ/בָאָ֗ה הַ/מֶּמְשָׁלָה֙ הָ/רִ֣אשֹׁנָ֔ה מַמְלֶ֖כֶת לְ/בַ֥ת יְרוּשָׁלִָֽם
4:9 Nunc quare moerore contraheris ? numquid rex non est tibi, aut consiliarius tuus periit, quia comprehendit te dolor sicut parturientem ?
*H Now, why art thou drawn together with grief? Hast thou no king in thee, or is thy counselor perished, because sorrow hath taken thee as a woman in labour.


Ver. 9. No king, after Sedecias was taken. C. — The two tribes shall be led into captivity and released. v. 12. W.

Καὶ νῦν ἱνατί ἔγνως κακά; μὴ βασιλεὺς οὐκ ἦν σοι; ἢ ἡ βουλή σου ἀπώλετο, ὅτι κατεκράτησάν σου ὠδῖνες ὡς τικτούσης;
עַתָּ֕ה לָ֥/מָּה תָרִ֖יעִי רֵ֑עַ הֲ/מֶ֣לֶךְ אֵֽין בָּ֗/ךְ אִֽם יוֹעֲצֵ/ךְ֙ אָבָ֔ד כִּֽי הֶחֱזִיקֵ֥/ךְ חִ֖יל כַּ/יּוֹלֵדָֽה
4:10 Dole et satage, filia Sion, quasi parturiens, quia nunc egredieris de civitate, et habitabis in regione, et venies usque ad Babylonem : ibi liberaberis, ibi redimet te Dominus de manu inimicorum tuorum.
Be in pain and labour, O daughter of Sion, as a woman that bringeth forth: for now shalt thou go out of the city, and shalt dwell in the country, and shalt come even to Babylon, there thou shalt be delivered: there the Lord will redeem thee out of the hand of thy enemies.
Ὤδινε καὶ ἀνδρίζου, καὶ ἔγγιζε θυγάτηρ Σιὼν ὡς τίκτουσα· διότι νῦν ἐξελεύσῃ ἐκ πόλεως, καὶ κατασκηνώσεις ἐν πεδίῳ, καὶ ἥξεις ἕως Βαβυλῶνος· ἐκεῖθεν ῥύσεταί σε, καὶ ἐκεῖθεν λυτρώσεταί σε Κύριος ὁ Θεός σου ἐκ χειρὸς ἐχθρῶν σου.

4:11 Et nunc congregatae sunt super te gentes multae, quae dicunt : Lapidetur, et aspiciat in Sion oculus noster.
*H And now many nations are gathered together against thee, and they say: Let her be stoned: and let our eye look upon Sion.


Ver. 11. Sion. Let us enter the sanctuary and plunder it. Cambyses was instigated to fall upon the Jews lately returned. Ezec. xxxviii. 11. His rapacious designs were frustrated, as those of persecutors will be. C.

Καὶ νῦν ἐπισυνήχθησαν ἐπὶ σὲ ἔθνη πολλὰ, λέγοντες, ἐπιχαρούμεθα, καὶ ἐπόψονται ἐπὶ Σιὼν οἱ ὀφθαλμοὶ ἡμῶν.
וְ/עַתָּ֛ה נֶאֶסְפ֥וּ עָלַ֖יִ/ךְ גּוֹיִ֣ם רַבִּ֑ים הָ/אֹמְרִ֣ים תֶּחֱנָ֔ף וְ/תַ֥חַז בְּ/צִיּ֖וֹן עֵינֵֽי/נוּ
4:12 Ipsi autem non cognoverunt cogitationes Domini, et non intellexerunt consilium ejus, quia congregavit eos quasi foenum areae.
*H But they have not known the thoughts of the Lord, and have not understood his counsel: because he hath gathered them together as the hay of the floor.


Ver. 12. Hay. Prot. "sheaves." H. — People were thus often trodden to death by oxen. Athen. xii. 5.

Αὐτοὶ δὲ οὐκ ἔγνωσαν τὸν λογισμὸν Κυρίου, καὶ οὐ συνῆκαν τὴν βουλὴν αὐτοῦ, ὅτι συνήγαγεν αὐτοὺς ὡς δράγματα ἅλωνος.
וְ/הֵ֗מָּה לֹ֤א יָֽדְעוּ֙ מַחְשְׁב֣וֹת יְהוָ֔ה וְ/לֹ֥א הֵבִ֖ינוּ עֲצָת֑/וֹ כִּ֥י קִבְּצָ֖/ם כֶּ/עָמִ֥יר גֹּֽרְנָ/ה
4:13 Surge, et tritura, filia Sion, quia cornu tuum ponam ferreum, et ungulas tuas ponam aereas ; et comminues populos multos, et interficies Domino rapinas eorum, et fortitudinem eorum Domino universae terrae.]
*H Arise, and tread, O daughter of Sion: for I will make thy horn iron, and thy hoofs I will make brass: and thou shalt beat in pieces many peoples, and shalt immolate the spoils of them to the Lord, and their strength to the Lord of the whole earth.


Ver.13. Brass. Fear nothing. The Jews did not attack the army of Cambyses, (Ezec. xxxviii. 21. and xxxix. 10. C.) at least at first. H. — But what God did for them is attributed to them. C. — Immolate. Sept. "devote to the Lord their multitude, and," &c. Prot. "gain," (H.) or what spoils they have taken. C.

Ἀνάστηθι, καὶ ἀλόα αὐτοὺς θυγάτηρ Σιὼν, ὅτι τὰ κέρατά σου θήσομαι σιδηρᾶ, καὶ τὰς ὁπλάς σου θήσομαι χαλκᾶς· καὶ κατατήξεις λαοὺς πολλοὺς, καὶ ἀναθήσεις τῷ Κυρίῳ τὸ πλῆθος αὐτῶν, καὶ τὴν ἰσχὺν αὐτῶν τῷ Κυρίῳ πάσης τῆς γῆς.
