19:1 Fuit quidam vir Levites habitans in latere montis Ephraim, qui accepit uxorem de Bethlehem Juda :
*H There was a certain Levite, who dwelt on the side of mount Ephraim, who took a wife of Bethlehem Juda:


Ver. 1. Ephraim. Some think at Silo, to which place, he says, he was going, (v. 18,) though it might be only out of devotion. C. — A wife. Heb. "a concubine." Sept. joins both together, "he took a harlot to wife." H.

Καὶ ἐγένετο ἀνὴρ Λευίτης παροικῶν ἐν μηροῖς ὄρους Ἐφραὶμ, καὶ ἔλαβεν αὐτῷ γυναῖκα παλλακὴν ἀπὸ Βηθλεὲμ Ἰούδα.
וַ/יְהִי֙ בַּ/יָּמִ֣ים הָ/הֵ֔ם וּ/מֶ֖לֶךְ אֵ֣ין בְּ/יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל וַ/יְהִ֣י אִ֣ישׁ לֵוִ֗י גָּ֚ר בְּ/יַרְכְּתֵ֣י הַר אֶפְרַ֔יִם וַ/יִּֽקַּֽח ל/וֹ֙ אִשָּׁ֣ה פִילֶ֔גֶשׁ מִ/בֵּ֥ית לֶ֖חֶם יְהוּדָֽה
19:2 quae reliquit eum, et reversa est in domum patris sui in Bethlehem, mansitque apud eum quatuor mensibus.
*H And she left him, and returned to her father's house in Bethlehem, and abode with him four months.


Ver. 2. Left him. Heb. thozné. Now tizne, (D.) "his concubine, fell into fornication against (Junius improperly translates with) him." Chal. "She despised and went from him." Sept. "She was vexed at or she left him." C. — Josephus, "as he was deeply in love with her on account of her beauty, he was displeased that she did not correspond with his love. Hence a quarrel ensuing, the woman would not bear his continual expostulations, and leaving her husband, after four months, returns to her parents. Hither, overcome by his love for her, he follows, and, by the mediation of her parents, he is reconciled to his wife, both agreeing to lay aside all complaints." Ant. v. 2. — It is clear that the Sept. Vulg. &c. have read the text in a different manner from what we do at present, and their explanation seems more rational than the Hebrew. For, is it probable that a Levite should go to be reconciled to an adulteress, contrary to the intention of the law (Deut. xxiv. 2. Jer. iii. 1. Prov. xviii. 22.) and the custom of the Jews, as well as of pagan nations, who looked upon those with contempt, who kept a woman of this character? The word concubine, we have often remarked, signifies a wife without a dowry, &c. (C.) such as the Mahometans still maintain as lawful wives. Busbec. ii. — Months. Josephus explain this of the time she had remained with her husband.

Καὶ ἐπορεύθη ἀπʼ αὐτοῦ ἡ παλλακὴ αὐτοῦ, καὶ ἀπῆλθε παρʼ αὐτοῦ εἰς οἶκον πατρὸς αὐτῆς εἰς Βηθλεὲμ Ἰούδα, καὶ ἦν ἐκεῖ ἡμέρας μηνῶν τεσσάρων.

19:3 Secutusque est eam vir suus, volens reconciliari ei, atque blandiri, et secum reducere, habens in comitatu puerum et duos asinos : quae suscepit eum, et introduxit in domum patris sui. Quod cum audisset socer ejus, eumque vidisset, occurrit ei laetus,
*H And her husband followed her, willing to be reconciled with her, and to speak kindly to her, and to bring her back with him, having with him a servant and two asses: and she received him, and brought him into her father's house. And when his father in law had heard this, and had seen him, he met him with joy,


Ver. 3. With him. Heb. "her husband arose and followed her to speak to her heart, to bring her back." Gen. xxxiv. 3. He shewed great condescension and love, (H.) and she received him with suitable sentiments of regard, and did not become more haughty, as women, who perceive themselves to be courted, frequently do. If she had been married to another, she could not have been received by her former husband.

Καὶ ἀνέστη ὁ ἀνὴρ αὐτῆς, καὶ ἐπορεύθη ὀπίσω αὐτῆς τοῦ λαλῆσαι ἐπὶ καρδίαν αὐτῆς, τοῦ ἐπιστρέψαι αὐτὴν αὐτῷ· καὶ νεανίας αὐτοῦ μετʼ αὐτοῦ, καὶ ζεῦγος ὄνων· ἡ δὲ εἰσήνεγκεν αὐτὸν εἰς οἶκον πατρὸς αὐτῆς· καὶ εἶδεν αὐτὸν ὁ πατὴρ τῆς νεάνιδος, καὶ ηὐφράνθη εἰς συνάντησιν αὐτοῦ.

19:4 et amplexatus est hominem. Mansitque gener in domo soceri tribus diebus, comedens cum eo et bibens familiariter.
And embraced the man. And the son in law tarried in the house of his father in law three days, eating with him and drinking familiarly.
Καὶ κατέσχεν αὐτὸν ὁ γαμβρὸς αὐτοῦ ὁ πατὴρ τῆς νεάνιδος, καὶ ἐκάθισε μετʼ αὐτοῦ ἐπὶ τρεῖς ἡμέρας, καὶ ἔφαγον καὶ ἔπιον, καὶ ηὐλίσθησαν ἐκεῖ.
וַ/יֶּחֱזַק בּ֤/וֹ חֹֽתְנ/וֹ֙ אֲבִ֣י הַֽ/נַּעֲרָ֔ה וַ/יֵּ֥שֶׁב אִתּ֖/וֹ שְׁלֹ֣שֶׁת יָמִ֑ים וַ/יֹּאכְלוּ֙ וַ/יִּשְׁתּ֔וּ וַ/יָּלִ֖ינוּ שָֽׁם
19:5 Die autem quarto de nocte consurgens, proficisci voluit : quem tenuit socer, et ait ad eum : Gusta prius pauxillum panis, et conforta stomachum, et sic proficisceris.
But on the fourth day, arising early in the morning, he desired to depart. But his father in law kept him, and said to him: Taste first a little bread, and strengthen thy stomach, and so thou shalt depart.
Καὶ ἐγένετο τῇ ἡμέρᾳ τῇ τετάρτῃ, καὶ ὤρθρισαν τοπρωῒ καὶ ἀνέστη τοῦ πορευθῆναι, καὶ εἶπεν ὁ πατὴρ τῆς νεάνιδος πρὸς τὸν νυμφίον αὐτοῦ, στήρισον τὴν καρδιάν σου ψωμῷ ἄρτου, καὶ μετὰ τοῦτο πορεύσεσθε.
וַֽ/יְהִי֙ בַּ/יּ֣וֹם הָ/רְבִיעִ֔י וַ/יַּשְׁכִּ֥ימוּ בַ/בֹּ֖קֶר וַ/יָּ֣קָם לָ/לֶ֑כֶת וַ/יֹּאמֶר֩ אֲבִ֨י הַֽ/נַּעֲרָ֜ה אֶל חֲתָנ֗/וֹ סְעָ֧ד לִבְּ/ךָ֛ פַּת לֶ֖חֶם וְ/אַחַ֥ר תֵּלֵֽכוּ
19:6 Sederuntque simul, ac comederunt et biberunt. Dixitque pater puellae ad generum suum : Quaeso te ut hodie hic maneas, pariterque laetemur.
And they sat down together, and ate and drank. And the father of the young woman said to his son in law: I beseech thee to stay here to day, and let us make merry together.
Καὶ ἐκάθισαν καὶ ἔφαγον οἱ δύο ἐπὶ τὸ αὐτὸ καὶ ἔπιον· καὶ εἶπεν ὁ πατὴρ τῆς νεάνιδος πρὸς τὸν ἄνδρα, ἄγε δὴ αὐλίσθητι, καὶ ἀγαθυνθήσεται ἡ καρδία σου.
וַ/יֵּשְׁב֗וּ וַ/יֹּאכְל֧וּ שְׁנֵי/הֶ֛ם יַחְדָּ֖ו וַ/יִּשְׁתּ֑וּ וַ/יֹּ֜אמֶר אֲבִ֤י הַֽ/נַּעֲרָה֙ אֶל הָ/אִ֔ישׁ הֽוֹאֶל נָ֥א וְ/לִ֖ין וְ/יִטַ֥ב לִבֶּֽ/ךָ
19:7 At ille consurgens, coepit velle proficisci. Et nihilominus obnixe eum socer tenuit, et apud se fecit manere.
*H But he rising up, began to be for departing. And nevertheless his father in law earnestly pressed him, and made him stay with him.


Ver. 7. With him. A beautiful instance of hospitality, like that of the disciples at Emaus. Luc. xxiv. 29. M.

Καὶ ἀνέστη ὁ ἀνὴρ τοῦ πορεύεσθαι αὐτός· καὶ ἐβιάσατο αὐτὸν ὁ γαμβρὸς αὐτοῦ, καὶ ἐκάθισε καὶ ηὐλίσθη ἐκεῖ.
וַ/יָּ֥קָם הָ/אִ֖ישׁ לָ/לֶ֑כֶת וַ/יִּפְצַר בּ/וֹ֙ חֹתְנ֔/וֹ וַ/יָּ֖שָׁב וַ/יָּ֥לֶן שָֽׁם
19:8 Mane autem facto, parabat Levites iter. Cui socer rursum : Oro te, inquit, ut paululum cibi capias, et assumptis viribus donec increscat dies, postea proficiscaris. Comederunt ergo simul.
*H But when morning was come, the Levite prepared to go on his journey. And his father in law said to him again: I beseech thee to take a little meat, and strengthening thyself, till the day be farther advanced, afterwards thou mayest depart. And they ate together.


Ver. 8. Advanced. Heb. "and they tarried until the evening." Sept. "rest till the day decline." H. — He wishes them to wait till the heat of the day be over. C. — When he had obtained this request, he made the late hour an excuse for detaining them longer. But unhappily, the Levite was too resolute and desirous of returning home.

Καὶ ὤρθρισε τοπρωῒ τῇ ἡμέρᾳ τῇ πέμπτῃ τοῦ πορευθῆναι· καὶ εἶπεν ὁ πατὴρ τῆς νεάνιδος, στήρισον δὴ τὴν καρδίαν σου, καὶ στράτευσον ἕως κλῖναι τὴν ἡμέραν· καὶ ἔφαγον οἱ δύο.
וַ/יַּשְׁכֵּ֨ם בַּ/בֹּ֜קֶר בַּ/יּ֣וֹם הַ/חֲמִישִׁי֮ לָ/לֶכֶת֒ וַ/יֹּ֣אמֶר אֲבִ֣י הַֽ/נַּעֲרָ֗ה סְעָד נָא֙ לְבָ֣בְ/ךָ֔ וְ/הִֽתְמַהְמְה֖וּ עַד נְט֣וֹת הַ/יּ֑וֹם וַ/יֹּאכְל֖וּ שְׁנֵי/הֶֽם
19:9 Surrexitque adolescens, ut pergeret cum uxore sua et puero. Cui rursum locutus est socer : Considera quod dies ad occasum declivior sit, et propinquat ad vesperum : mane apud me etiam hodie, et duc laetum diem, et cras proficisceris ut vadas in domum tuam.
*H And the young man arose to set forward with his wife and servant. And his father in law spoke to him again: Consider that the day is declining, and draweth toward evening: tarry with me to day also, and spend the day in mirth, and to morrow thou shalt depart, that thou mayest go into thy house.


Ver. 9. Depart. Heb. and Sept. add, "early," before the sun was up to render travelling incommodious. H.

Καὶ ἀνέστη ὁ ἀνὴρ τοῦ πορευθῆναι αὐτὸς, καὶ ἡ παλλακὴ αὐτοῦ, καὶ ὁ νεανίας αὐτοῦ· καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῷ ὁ γάμβρὸς αὐτοῦ ὁ πατὴρ τῆς νεάνιδος, ἰδοὺ δὴ ἠσθένησεν ἡμέρα εἰς τὴν ἑσπέραν· αὐλίσθητι ὧδε, καὶ ἀγαθυνθήσεται ἡ καρδία σου, καὶ ὀρθριεῖτε αὔριον εἰς ὁδὸν ὑμῶν, καὶ πορεύσῃ εἰς τὸ σκήνωμά σου.
וַ/יָּ֤קָם הָ/אִישׁ֙ לָ/לֶ֔כֶת ה֥וּא וּ/פִילַגְשׁ֖/וֹ וְ/נַעֲר֑/וֹ וַ/יֹּ֣אמֶר ל֣/וֹ חֹתְנ֣/וֹ אֲבִ֣י הַֽ/נַּעֲרָ֡ה הִנֵּ֣ה נָא֩ רָפָ֨ה הַ/יּ֜וֹם לַ/עֲרֹ֗ב לִֽינוּ נָ֞א הִנֵּ֨ה חֲנ֤וֹת הַ/יּוֹם֙ לִ֥ין פֹּה֙ וְ/יִיטַ֣ב לְבָבֶ֔/ךָ וְ/הִשְׁכַּמְתֶּ֤ם מָחָר֙ לְ/דַרְכְּ/כֶ֔ם וְ/הָלַכְתָּ֖ לְ/אֹהָלֶֽ/ךָ
19:10 Noluit gener acquiescere sermonibus ejus : sed statim perrexit, et venit contra Jebus, quae altero nomine vocatur Jerusalem, ducens secum duos asinos onustos, et concubinam.
*H His son in law would not consent to his words: but forthwith went forward, and came over against Jebus, which by another name is called Jerusalem, leading with him two asses loaden, and his concubine.


Ver. 10. Jebus was about six short miles from Bethlehem, and as many from Gabaa. It had not yet fallen into the hands of Juda (C.) and Benjamin, (H.) or they had been expelled again, so that the old inhabitants held possession of it at this time, (C.) as they did of the citadel till the reign of David. See C. i. 6. 21. H. — Concubine. She was his lawful wife: but even lawful wives are frequently in Scripture called concubines. See above, chap. viii. ver. 31. Ch. — ver. 2.

Καὶ οὐκ εὐδόκησεν ὁ ἀνὴρ αὐλισθῆναι, καὶ ἀνέστη καὶ ἀπῆλθε, καὶ ἦλθεν ἕως ἀπέναντι Ἰεβοὺς, αὕτη ἐστὶν Ἱερουσαλὴμ, καὶ μετʼ αὐτοῦ ζεῦγος ὄνων ἐπισεσαγμένων, καὶ ἡ παλλακὴ αὐτοῦ μετʼ αὐτοῦ.
וְ/לֹֽא אָבָ֤ה הָ/אִישׁ֙ לָ/ל֔וּן וַ/יָּ֣קָם וַ/יֵּ֗לֶךְ וַ/יָּבֹא֙ עַד נֹ֣כַח יְב֔וּס הִ֖יא יְרוּשָׁלִָ֑ם וְ/עִמּ֗/וֹ צֶ֤מֶד חֲמוֹרִים֙ חֲבוּשִׁ֔ים וּ/פִילַגְשׁ֖/וֹ עִמּֽ/וֹ
19:11 Jamque erant juxta Jebus, et dies mutabatur in noctem : dixitque puer ad dominum suum : Veni, obsecro : declinemus ad urbem Jebusaeorum, et maneamus in ea.
And now they were come near Jebus, and the day was far spent: and the servant said to his master: Come, I beseech thee, let us turn into the city of the Jebusites, and lodge there.
Καὶ ἦλθοσαν ἕως Ἰεβούς· καὶ ἡ ἡμέρα προβεβήκει σφόδρα, καὶ εἴπεν ὁ νεανίας πρὸς τὸν κύριον αὐτοῦ, δεῦρο δὴ καὶ ἐκκλίνωμεν εἰς πόλιν τοῦ Ἰεβουσὶ ταύτην, καὶ αὐλισθῶμεν ἐν αὐτῇ.
הֵ֣ם עִם יְב֔וּס וְ/הַ/יּ֖וֹם רַ֣ד מְאֹ֑ד וַ/יֹּ֨אמֶר הַ/נַּ֜עַר אֶל אֲדֹנָ֗י/ו לְכָ/ה נָּ֛א וְ/נָס֛וּרָה אֶל עִֽיר הַ/יְבוּסִ֥י הַ/זֹּ֖את וְ/נָלִ֥ין בָּֽ/הּ
19:12 Cui respondit dominus : Non ingrediar oppidum gentis alienae, quae non est de filiis Israel : sed transibo usque Gabaa,
His master answered him: I will not go into the town of another nation, who are not of the children of Israel, but I will pass over to Gabaa:
Καὶ εἶπε πρὸς αὐτὸν ὁ κύριος αὐτοῦ, οὐκ ἐκκλινοῦμεν εἰς πόλιν ἀλλοτρίαν, ἐν ᾗ οὐκ ἔστιν ἀπὸ υἱῶν Ἰσραὴλ ὧδε, καὶ παρελευσόμεθα ἕως Γαβαά.
וַ/יֹּ֤אמֶר אֵלָי/ו֙ אֲדֹנָ֔י/ו לֹ֤א נָסוּר֙ אֶל עִ֣יר נָכְרִ֔י אֲשֶׁ֛ר לֹֽא מִ/בְּנֵ֥י יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל הֵ֑נָּה וְ/עָבַ֖רְנוּ עַד גִּבְעָֽה
19:13 et cum illuc pervenero, manebimus in ea, aut certe in urbe Rama.
*H And when I shall come thither, we will lodge there, or at least in the city of Rama.


Ver. 13. Rama was not so far as Gabaa; so that, if they could not travel to the latter place, they might turn to the former, and lodge all night. They held on their journey, however, till they came not very late, to Gabaa.

Καὶ εἶπε τῷ νεανίᾳ αὐτοῦ, δεῦρο καὶ ἐγγίσωμεν ἑνὶ τῶν τόπων, καὶ αὐλισθησόμεθα ἐν Γαβαᾷ ἢ ἐν Ῥαμᾷ.
וַ/יֹּ֣אמֶר לְ/נַעֲר֔/וֹ לְךָ֥ וְ/נִקְרְבָ֖ה בְּ/אַחַ֣ד הַ/מְּקֹמ֑וֹת וְ/לַ֥נּוּ בַ/גִּבְעָ֖ה א֥וֹ בָ/רָמָֽה
19:14 Transierunt ergo Jebus, et coeptum carpebant iter, occubuitque eis sol juxta Gabaa, quae est in tribu Benjamin :
So they passed by Jebus, and went on their journey, and the sun went down upon them when they were by Gabaa, which is in the tribe of Benjamin:
Καὶ παρῆλθον καὶ ἐπορεύθησαν, καὶ ἔδυ αὐτοῖς ὁ ἥλιος ἐχόμενα τῆς Γαβαὰ, ἥ ἐστιν ἐν τῷ Βενιαμίν.
וַ/יַּעַבְר֖וּ וַ/יֵּלֵ֑כוּ וַ/תָּבֹ֤א לָ/הֶם֙ הַ/שֶּׁ֔מֶשׁ אֵ֥צֶל הַ/גִּבְעָ֖ה אֲשֶׁ֥ר לְ/בִנְיָמִֽן
19:15 diverteruntque ad eam, ut manerent ibi. Quo cum intrassent, sedebant in platea civitatis, et nullus eos recipere voluit hospitio.
*H And they turned into it to lodge there. And when they were come in, they sat in the street of the city, for no man would receive them to lodge.


Ver. 15. Lodge. No one invited them in. How much had these people degenerated from the manners of Abraham and of Lot, to imitate those of the men of Sodom! H. — There was no inn it seems at Gabaa, though we read of some at Jericho, Gaza, &c. C. xvi. 1. Jos. ii. 1. Gen. xlii. 27. C.

Καὶ ἐξέκλιναν ἐκεῖ τοῦ εἰσελθεὶν αὐλισθῆναι ἐν Γαβαᾷ· καὶ εἰσῆλθον, καὶ ἐκάθισαν ἐν τῇ πλατείᾳ τῆς πόλεως, καὶ οὐκ ἦν ἀνὴρ συνάγων αὐτοὺς εἰς οἰκίαν αὐλισθῆναι.
וַ/יָּסֻ֣רוּ שָׁ֔ם לָ/ב֖וֹא לָ/ל֣וּן בַּ/גִּבְעָ֑ה וַ/יָּבֹ֗א וַ/יֵּ֨שֶׁב֙ בִּ/רְח֣וֹב הָ/עִ֔יר וְ/אֵ֥ין אִ֛ישׁ מְאַסֵּֽף אוֹתָ֥/ם הַ/בַּ֖יְתָ/ה לָ/לֽוּן
19:16 Et ecce, apparuit homo senex, revertens de agro et de opere suo vesperi, qui et ipse de monte erat Ephraim, et peregrinus habitabat in Gabaa : homines autem regionis illius erant filii Jemini.
*H And behold they saw an old man, returning out of the field and from his work in the evening, and he also was of mount Ephraim, and dwelt as a stranger in Gabaa; but the men of that country were the children of Jemini.

Καὶ ἰδοὺ ἀνὴρ πρεσβύτης ἤρχετο ἐξ ἔργων αὐτοῦ ἐξ ἀγροῦ ἐν ἑσπέρᾳ, καὶ ὁ ἀνὴρ ἦν ἐξ ὄρους Ἐφραὶμ, καὶ αὐτὸς παρῴκει ἐν Γαβαᾷ, καὶ οἱ ἄνδρες τοῦ τόπου υἱοὶ Βενιαμίν.
וְ/הִנֵּ֣ה אִ֣ישׁ זָקֵ֗ן בָּ֣א מִֽן מַעֲשֵׂ֤/הוּ מִן הַ/שָּׂדֶה֙ בָּ/עֶ֔רֶב וְ/הָ/אִישׁ֙ מֵ/הַ֣ר אֶפְרַ֔יִם וְ/הוּא גָ֖ר בַּ/גִּבְעָ֑ה וְ/אַנְשֵׁ֥י הַ/מָּק֖וֹם בְּנֵ֥י יְמִינִֽי
19:17 Elevatisque oculis, vidit senex sedentem hominem cum sarcinulis suis in platea civitatis, et dixit ad eum : Unde venis ? et quo vadis ?
*H And the old man lifting up his eyes, saw the man sitting with his bundles in the street of the city, and said to him: Whence comest thou? and whither goest thou?

Καὶ ᾖρε τοὺς ὀφθαλμοὺς αὐτοῦ, καὶ εἶδε τὸν ὁδοιπόρον ἄνδρα ἐν τῇ πλατείᾳ τῆς πόλεως· καὶ εἶπεν ὁ ἀνὴρ ὁ πρεσβύτης, ποῦ πορεύῃ, καὶ πόθεν ἔρχῃ;

19:19 habentes paleas et foenum in asinorum pabulum, et panem ac vinum in meos et ancillae tuae usus, et pueri qui mecum est : nulla re indigemus nisi hospitio.
*H We have straw and hay for provender of the asses, and bread and wine for the use of myself and of thy handmaid, and of the servant that is with me: we want nothing but lodging.


Ver. 19. Straw. It used to be cut small, as hay was very scarce. S. Jerom in Isai. xxv. Heb. "straw and provender."

19:20 Cui respondit senex : Pax tecum sit, ego praebebo omnia quae necessaria sunt : tantum, quaeso, ne in platea maneas.
*H And the old man answered him: Peace be with thee: I will furnish all things that are necessary: only I beseech thee, stay not in the street.


Ver. 20. I will. Heb. "all thy wants be upon me." I will furnish all that may be requisite. In this wicked city, there was at least, one generous soul, like Lot in Sodom. Gen. xviii. and xix.

Ver. 24. I have, &c. A similar proposal was made by Lot; (Gen. xix. 8,) and hence the old man, who was brought up to hard labour, and the young Levite might, through ignorance, suppose it lawful for them to do the like. M. — It is lawful to advise a man, who is about to commit two crimes, to be satisfied with the less: but we cannot persuade any one to do even the smallest offence, that good may ensue. Rom. iii. 8. The ignorance or good intention of these people might extenuate, but could hardly excuse their conduct, as it was unjust to the woman, whom the people of Gabaa did not ask for; and they ought rather to have encountered the utmost fury of the populace. Had the latter even come to the extremity proposed, if the Levite had made all possible resistance, his virtue could not have been injured. C. — His crown would have been doubled, as S. Lucy observed when the judge threatened to have her prostituted. Castitas mihi duplicabitur ad coronam. Dec. xiii. H. — Perhaps in the agitation of mind, caused by such a brutal proposal, the old man might have been so disturbed, as scarcely to know what he was saying, and he did not afterwards expose his daughter. C. — But the Levite, seeing him in such a dilemma, on his account (H.) took his wife by force. Heb. &c. See Tostat. Bonfrere. E. C. — Against nature. Heb. "unto this man do not so vile a thing."

Ver. 26. Lord. So wives styled their husbands. 1 Pet. iii. 5. — Down dead through fatigue, (M.) shame, and grief. Joseph. — She had not power to knock. C. — Though the former misconduct of this unhappy woman might call for punishment, yet, after she was reconciled to her husband, we cannot but think he used her ill, though he acted through a sort of constraint and ignorance. H. — Instances of women dying under a similar treatment, may be found in Herodotus, and in the Russian and Turkish historians. C.

He thinking she was taking her rest, said to her: Arise, and let us be going. But as she made no answer, perceiving she was dead, he took her up, and laid her upon his ass, and returned to his house.

Ver. 29. Israel. One part, like an epistle, written with blood, to every tribe. Salien. — Some, without reason, think that Benjamin was neglected: but they were to be summoned, to bring their guilty brethren (C.) to condign punishment, or to share in their fate, as accomplices of the crime. H. — The state of the republic authorized the Levite to take this extraordinary method of rousing all to a sense of horror for what had been done. C. — His brethren, dispersed through the country, would no doubt take part in his grief.

19:30 Quod cum vidissent singuli, conclamabant : Numquam res talis facta est in Israel, ex eo die quo ascenderunt patres nostri de Aegypto usque in praesens tempus : ferte sententiam, et in commune decernite quid facto opus sit.
*H And when every one had seen this, they all cried out: There was never such a thing done in Israel, from the day that our fathers came up out of Egypt, until this day: give sentence, and decree in common what ought to be done.


Ver. 30. Egypt, that is for the space of eighty years. Salien. — Indeed the annals of all past ages could hardly furnish an instance of such barbarous lust. — Done. In every city, people gathered together to consult how the crime was to be expiated; (H.) and all agreed to assemble before the Lord. C. — Grabe's Sept. observes, that the Levite "gave order to the men, to whom he sent, saying, these things shall you speak to every Israelite. If such a word (or thing) has come to pass, from the day of the coming up of the sons of Israel out of Egypt, till the present day? Take ye advice concerning it, and speak." H.
